How They Met

8/2019: Love on the Labor Floor

Since Moonshine and I had just moved to the Lehigh Valley, we weren't really looking to add to our pack. We just wanted more time with the great outdoors. In the fall of 2019, I had just finished my orientation on day shift and was switching to night shift on Labor and Delivery at St. Luke's Allentown Campus. I was sitting in the nurses' station listening in on their conversations, when one of them had asked who was the next resident on for nights. One nurse looked at the schedule and stated Shannon was on in a disgruntled manner. I had asked "What is wrong with Shannon?" They said she is "sooooo happy", I, of course, rolled my eyes because how can someone be "too happy"? I soon found out that it wasn't "too happy." It was pure humbled happiness that Shannon spread. One morning when I was popping my 3am popcorn, Shannon came skipping around the corner and asked if that was popcorn. The sarcastic Jae wanted to say "no, its carrots" but she was my superior and I didn't want to get in trouble 1 week off orientation so asked if she wanted some. We had conversations over popcorn for the next few nights about random benign stuff. I couldn't tell if she was being flirty nice or just regular nice so I asked one of my coworkers. Her response was look her up on Facebook. The internet gave me hope she was crushing on me, but in my head there is no way a doctor wanted to date a surgical tech. Well obviously, I was totally wrong. It didn't hit me until we were both assisting in a delivery in room 325. Shannon was asking to help me since the attending was teaching the family medicine resident and there wasn't enough room for both of them. She kept looking at me and smiling. I asked her what she kept smiling about. To which she simple stated how lucky we are to be here delivering this baby together. I smiled and she commented on my smile while staring deep into my soul. The light bulb went off!!! She really is flirting with me, not just being her normal nice. We started talking everyday and night since then.

First "Date"

10/12/2019: From wedding afterparty to our own wedding

Texting her every time I opened my eyes, "Good morning sunshine" was how I explained to Dustin (my best human friend) how much this young woman brightened my life. He was getting married soon and so we had our bromantic backpacking trip for his bachelor party. We went to Pulpit Rock and the Pinnacle. As we hiked up the mountain, I kept sending her random pictures of our adventure as he was talking about his wedding coming up that weekend. I thought of her every step of the hike. I almost felt obsessed! I didn't want to seem like a creeper, so I acted cool, calm and collected. But every cell in my body knew I was going to marry her one day, even though she swore up and down, she would never marry because she didn't believe in it. We set up camp and as morning came, Dustin and I hoped up and watched the sunrise together. I took a Timelapse video and sent it to her. She, of course, commented on how beautiful it was. As we packed up camp and started making our way down the mountain, I asked him if it was ok to invite Shannon to the wedding after party. He said, "Of course!" At his reception, Shannon and I were randomly conversing and making plans to see each other at the after party. She agreed to meet up, but I never thought in a million years she would actually show. When my roommate and I were walking into the lobby, I heard heels. I turned around and there she was: hair down and done, black shirt, maroon and gray warm shawl, jeans, heels and perfect shade of lipstick to go with her warm eyes. She sat down and I asked if I could get her a drink. She wanted a cider - the same as me! I found it remarkably cute that she ordered the same drink but come to find out, she actually likes ciders! We hang out with my friends and they encourage me to "not mess this one up". I was impressed she didn't get up and run with the comments that were floating around the table and I was a million percent sure I would never see her outside of work again. My friends were encouraging us to get a hotel room there and stay with them, but I didn't want to start this relationship with her on that note. She wanted to meet Moonshine so I invited her over to go for a walk. She followed me home and then we headed out with Moonshine. She didn't seem afraid or weirded out of where I lived. We lived in the middle downtown Allentown in a sketchy area. Little did I know that she lived only 4 blocks away! I led her to the Art Walk of Allentown because I knew the area was nicer and there was pretty lighted path. As we arrived at the park, we sat by the horse statue and talked- nothing serious, just basically how I am clueless to everything. Somewhere along the conversation she said she liked me. I panicked! The only reply I could come up with in such a short time was, "LIKE, like me, like me?" She chuckled and said "Yes... if we were in the 5th grade! So yes, I LIKE you, like you." We smiled at each other and from then on the "like like" continued to grow...

Popping the question: Part 1

6/12/2021: Back to where it started

Date days were rare with our crazy schedules, so I had to be sleek. Not to act as if this was "the day" that every woman dreams of. We started out with some margaritas to cool my nerves and padded my stomach full of knots with nachos at Tacos Y Tequilla. Over lunch, I kept going over how to start the conversation, which knee was the one to go down on. A million thoughts fly through my head as a million words flew out of her mouth. I'm not gonna lie I missed every single one. As we leave, I had asked her if she wanted to go for a walk, she willingly said yes and we trotted down the street. We turned the corner and she said, "oh, we are back here!!" I had brought her back to the little park of the Arts Walk in Allentown where we first said we "liked" each other. We sat at the picnic tables. I let her go on about something at work (still not retaining any word that came out). She paused and I knew I had to grab the reins to steer this conversation to a puzzle (because this is how we had spent a lot of our free time together). I hand her the black felt bag and as she opened it, she wasn't shocked. She probably knew it was a puzzle since I've given her many other hand made puzzles in this same bag. She pours out the pieces on the table and time froze. With every piece she moved I wanted to shout it at her. It took every piece of patience in me not to. She finished it and as she started to read the final guess as if she was on Wheel of Fortune, I dropped to a knee. She looked at me and I said, "go ahead open the box". As she reached across the table to open the golden snitch that I had carved by hand, I said, "well, will you?". She didn't even wait to see what was inside before she said, "YES!!" I probably could've given her a ring pop and she would've still said yes. She eagerly opened the golden snitch to see a hand-made ring made out of wood. She cried as if it was a huge diamond. We left to go back home to celebrate with some friends, on our way back, of course, she wanted to know about the future ring which I had told her was coming. I told her that I couldn't disclose any information as to when she would be getting it. Before this whole thing started, I gave her options. She picked the option where she gave me ideas and I had to make the decisions. So since she picked that option, she had to wait until part two just like the rest of you....

Popping the question: Part 2

6/26/2021: Glasbern Surprise

We went to the annual residency graduation celebration and Shannon showed off the hand-made wooden ring like a 3 carat diamond but little did she know.... To celebrate our "engagement," I decided I was going to take here to Glasbern Inn since that was a special place to us. I told her Dustin, my best friend, was going to come and take engagement photos for us. In her mind, she was already engaged what could possibly surprise her now? Well she didn't know she was going to marry "Mr. Sneaky" himself. She started getting ready as I laid in bed (because us guys don't need an hour to get ready). I laid there thinking of where would be the best place to do "it." We posed here and there smiled and kissed, acted goofy and as I turned I saw the water fall and I knew that was the place. We took a photo where she was behind me and I had flashed the ring. As we started making our way over to water fall I got more and more nervous. (Which I know is ridiculous since she already said yes). I asked her to sit down and as Dustin set up his camera, I knew it was time. He gave me a head nod and I told Shannon I was gonna act like I was proposing to her (with the hand carved snitch). I told her she had to act surprised for the camera and as she practiced her facial expressions, I put the diamond ring in the box I had made. I looked at her and said are you ready? She smiled as I opened the box. She looked down and gasped, "Is that the ring??" I told her yes and she was excited and happy in her unicorn sparkly way. She quickly put it on and since then has never taken it off.
