Train
Italy’s national train service, Trenitalia, is one of the easiest ways to travel between cities such as Florence, Rome, and other parts of Tuscany. It is highly recommended to purchase train tickets in advance. Tickets can be purchased through: • The Trenitalia App • The Trenitalia Website • Ticket machines at train stations • Station ticket counters Buying tickets in advance is recommended for high-speed trains, especially during summer.
Travel Note
Renting a car is often the easiest way to explore the Tuscan countryside and nearby villages. Visitors from the United States should bring a valid driver’s license. Most cars in Italy are manual transmission, so guests who prefer an automatic vehicle should reserve early, as availability can be limited. Many historic city centers have ZTL zones (limited traffic areas) where driving is restricted and monitored by cameras. Entering these zones without authorization can result in automatic fines, so it is best to park outside the historic center and walk. Gas stations offer self-service (self) and attended service (servito) options. Be sure to confirm whether your rental car uses benzina (gasoline) or gasolio (diesel) before fueling. Rental prices can sometimes be lower outside major city centers, so comparing pickup locations may help save money.
