We met in Chemistry class on the very first day of freshman year at the University of Memphis. We became friends, then shortly after the pandemic hit in our sophomore year, we began dating. We've basically been conjoined at the hip since then!
J.C. planned our very first date. He was really into rock climbing, so we went to High Point and he taught me how to climb. Even though I wasn't very good, we continued to go and High Point is where we spent most of our time in our first years together. He would climb and I would watch and do school work after I worked out myself. He eventually proposed here, so this gym has a very special place in our hearts.
J.C. always joked that he wanted to surprise me when he proposed. When the day came, I had no idea he had anything planned. My friends and family knew, because they had helped plan an engagement party, and no one slipped up and told me. He even convinced me to get my nails painted white earlier the morning of, and I still didn't have a clue! I wore sweatpants, no makeup, and threw my hair up when he asked me to go watch him climb, something we've done countless times over the years. He went up on a route and "fell" and pretended to hurt himself. I was under the impression he was genuinely hurt, and while checking on him is when he pulled out the ring. He was so nervous about doing it that he didn't even say any words -- he just held the box in my face. I was so convinced he broke his ankle that I couldn't find any words to say. Needless to say, he did surprise me -- and of course his leg was totally fine.
