Travel Note
If you do not plan on renting a car, Athens is filled with local taxis, which is great but can be inconvenient when you don't always have enough euros. Uber is pretty much available everywhere but unfortunately is not available for pickup from the airport. If possible, exchange money prior to your trip at your local bank or your airport since you will get better rates and lower fees for the exchange than at the Greek airport. You will need to take a taxi so we suggest a minimum of 100€ with you upon arrival for the taxi and any small transactions you will need (water, snacks, etc.) as some convenient stores may not accept debit/credit cards. There is usually a flat rate for a ride from the airport directly to the city. Check the sign by the taxi stand outside and also don't hesitate to ask airport staff :)
Rental Car
If you are thinking of renting a car for the trip, Alamo is our go-to. There are car rentals in the city center, but we love the convenience of picking up and dropping off our rental steps away from the airport terminal and highly recommend this hassle-free experience. When driving, please be aware of taxis and motorcycles at all times, as they often drive very recklessly and cause many accidents.
Travel Note
For guests, especially those not renting a car, we recommend staying within the city center in areas such as Plaka, Monastiraki and Thiseo since many attractions like Acropolis are located there. Getting around is much easier and local transportation is more affordable than traveling from the outskirts into the city. The link below gives a list of suggested neighborhoods around Athens depending on the vibe you're looking for. For those who want to enjoy more of the Coastal beauty of Athens (and preferably will have a car) like easy access to the beautiful beaches or some of the most stunning beachfront restaurants in the whole city should steer towards Alimo, Glyfada, Voula and more.
Travel Note
When in Greece most definitely pig out! Local restaurants are easy to find and are scattered around Athens. It is hard to find a restaurant that is not authentic, which is a great thing, so be spontaneous and adventurous. While dining in Athens, some must try dishes include Souvlaki (George's favorite of all time), Horiatiko Loukaniko (Jade's favorite of all time), Lamb Chops (our second favorite), Bifteki, Tzatziki, Horiatiki Salad and ALL seafood such as Grilled Octopus, Grilled Fish, Shrimp, Calamari, etc.
