We met during the first few weeks of our freshman year at Arizona State University. We were both just beginning to adjust to college life when a mutual friend, Andy, unknowingly brought us together. Danny had known Andy since their Loyola and Brophy days, and Jackie met him at ASU since they lived on the same dorm floor. One night, Andy invited Jackie to what he called a “small game night”, which turned out to be a packed room full of guys. Jackie, feeling out of place but determined to be brave, walked into that testosterone-filled dorm and stuck close to the paisas in the room. That’s where we first saw each other, Jackie, the girl from Yuma, and Danny, the quiet guy in glasses. We didn’t say much that night, but Danny quickly picked up on where Jackie was from and made sure to tease her about it. From then on, she was “the Yuma girl.” We stayed friendly throughout college, exchanging polite hellos, but that was the extent of it until Fall of 2021. That’s when we started crossing paths more often: game nights, casual hangouts, little by little spending more time around each other. And slowly, something shifted. Jackie had always raved about how good Korean BBQ was, and Danny was intrigued. One day, out of the blue, he texted: “Let’s go to Korean BBQ so I can see what it’s all about.” That dinner at Gen KBBQ in Tempe became our first official date, and fun fact: he’s been obsessed with Korean BBQ ever since. Not long after that, thanks to a hilariously awkward but well-meaning nudge from Jackie’s brother, Chris, we officially became a couple.
