We are not having a formal dress code, so please feel free to wear whatever you feel comfortable in. A nice pair of pants and a button-down shirt for men, and a sundress or skirt and blouse for women would be perfect. As a fair warning, suits will likely be too hot for the Yucatan.
Cancun International Airport (CUN) is the best, only an hour and a half away from the Wedding Venue and events. Merida International Airport is another option roughly the same distance away, but they do not have many direct flights.
Yes, you do need a passport to go to Mexico. You can get it expedited and have it in 3-5 weeks or the routine process takes about 6-9 weeks. Please go to travel.state.gov for more information.
We use Booking.com and Expedia.com for most of our bookings when we travel, Booking for Hotels and Expedia for flights. Another great resource is Google Flights for finding the cheapest flight across multiple websites.
Car rental is the best option because it gives you so much freedom to explore the Yucatan. It is about 1 hour and 30 minute drive from the Cancun airport to Valladolid on the cuota (toll road). The toll road is a little expensive so be prepared to pay anywhere from 200 - 500 pesos (11-27 US dollars) each way from Cancun to Valladolid. Other transportation options include the bus, taxi, or private transfer.
Private transfers from the airport are the most convenient way to get to your hotel but cost around 400 US dollars round trip. A taxi is less expensive but the driver likely will not speak English and it may not be air conditioned. Taxis run around 100-200 US dollars each way and you should be able to get one at the airport. Both options for transportation can be found at the airport right when you exit. *Have your hotel name and reservation information saved on your phone to show your driver and they will know where to take you.
Car rentals are the best option for traveling in the Yucatan because they are very inexpensive. You can find cars rentals starting at 20 US dollars a day. Remember to take pictures of the car when you pick it up for later reference if needed. *You may also want to make sure that your phone has some type of offline map/navigation system that works without internet so you can get around easily.
NO! Do not drink the tap water or drink any water that isn't bottled or filtered. Water served to you at a restaurant in town will be bottled or filtered water in a glass, so do not worry about that, but feel free to ask if you are unsure. **PLEASE make sure that you are using bottled water to brush your teeth, too! NONE of the tap/sink water should be consumed due to bacteria.
Valladolid has stores and pharmacies where you can get over the counter medications, bug spray, toiletries, hair products, and snacks just like you can find at home. So if you leave something behind you can find a replacement. Clothing and comfy shoes are harder to find so if you have questions about what to pack please ask us.
You can download any of the free peso to dollar conversion apps that work *offline* to easily help you shop and eat around town. It is usually a 20 peso to 1 dollar exchange rate, roughly.
