We both started college in 2015, and it was quite a transition for both of us. Neither one of us knew anyone there, and we’re not exactly the most outgoing. Fortunately, we were quickly adopted into a very lively, supportive and fun-loving group of friends. We met each other in the cafeteria while we were eating with mutual friends. I knew pretty early on that I needed to get to know this girl better. She was kind, thoughtful, and easy to talk to. We had a lot in common too; we were both devout Christians and came from similar backgrounds. The more I got to know her, the more I liked her. She kept her sense of humor even during difficult times, and was one of the most supportive friends I’d ever had. Several of our friends went through some pretty difficult challenges Freshman year, and Emmalee was always there to support them and talk things through. Within a couple months of meeting her, I knew I wanted to be more than friends.
I waited almost a year before I asked her out. I’d never dated anyone before, and I didn’t trust myself not to rush into something ill-advised. I wanted to be 100% sure about things so I didn’t hurt her by starting something I hadn’t thought through. Evidently, throughout this whole time she’d had a really big crush on me too. Despite some pretty obvious signs, as well as hints from friends, I was oblivious. Finally, after almost a year, I decided I knew for sure. I asked her out in September 2016, and she said yes. I was so nervous and excited leading up to the big day! We had lunch at a local Vietnamese restaurant, and walked through Champoeg park while we talked about life, family and our interests. We were both really nervous and awkward, but I couldn’t have imagined a better day.
Many study parties, hard conversations, and late-night trips to the park later, I knew that this was the woman I wanted to marry. With the help of an accomplice (thanks Jess!) I sneakily figured out what kinds of rings she liked. On March 24th 2019, we re-created our first date. Down by the river at Champoeg park, I told her how much she meant to me, and that I wanted to be with her for the rest of my life. I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. (She said yes).
