We met the modern way—on Hinge—and decided to grab dinner in Chinatown on a Thursday night in July. Jaclyn immediately broke her personal rule of “only drinks on a first date” (dinner is a commitment!) because she really wanted an excuse to take the water taxi. Little did she know, Evan loves Chinese food and loves Chinatown even more. When she suggested it, he was all in, and even gave her two restaurant options: one very touristy and one more under-the-radar. She chose the less known one, obviously. In true Jaclyn fashion, she got lost on the way to the restaurant. She wasn’t late, but Evan still went out looking for her, which felt like a good sign. Dinner turned into drinks at a speakeasy Jaclyn had heard about, and over cocktails they discovered something shocking: Evan went to college with Jaclyn’s sister, Candace, and partied with her frequently freshman and sophomore year. Naturally, Jaclyn immediately went to the bathroom to text Candace and ask if Evan was a keeper. Shockingly (and thankfully), Candace approved. At the end of the night, Evan ordered an Uber home for both of them. When they got to his place, he offered to run upstairs and grab a bottle of Hawkeye vodka for Jaclyn to give to her sister. IYKYK. Jaclyn was mostly just relieved Evan didn’t stay in the Uber and follow her home, especially since he had moved out of his apartment that day, was leaving for Europe the next morning, and technically did not have a place to live when he returned. She briefly wondered if the entire dinner had been a very elaborate ploy for a bed... and was happy to be wrong. Unfortunately (or so she thought), Evan was in Europe for 10 days, and then Jaclyn left for Europe for 14 days. She assumed that was the end of the story. But Evan texted her while he was in Europe. And then continued texting her while she was in Europe. Nearly a month and a half after their first date, they finally went on their second date, and the rest is history.
