Maid of Honor
Erin is a third grade teacher and has known Nicole since their junior year of high school in Corvallis, Oregon. They became close while taking a chemistry class and sharing their love of puns. When Nicole and Erin are both in Oregon, they go on crazy road trips where they listen to country music, eat bomb snacks, and usually almost die. Sam and Nicole, may your love last even longer than Erin and Nicole’s 5 year Snapchat streak!
Best Man
I live in the Charlottesville, Virginia area where I work as a nurse, and fly Blackhawk helicopters in the National guard.I met Sam when he came home with Mom and Dad one day in June, 1993. We grew up together camping, scouting, running cross-country together. My wife, Grace, is the event coordinator for Sam’s wedding. She also gave birth to our son, Leo, in May 2019. Fun fact: Sam and I attempted to build a sailboat together in our teens. It didn’t float.

Devon met Nicole during the Spring of freshman year when they were given the same “big” in their service fraternity, APO. While Devon was super excited about this, Nicole was not as enthused. It took a bit of convincing, but she eventually won her way into Nicole’s heart! Devon is ecstatic that Nicole’s ambivalence towards her eventually turned into a beautiful friendship. Outside of being Nicole’s bridesmaid, Devon loves to hike and cook new foods (sometimes even successfully)! She recently received her M.S. in Food Systems where she did research on agricultural adaptation to climate change in Northern New England. Please enjoy this picture of her with one of her favorite research subjects!

How we met: The year was 2011. Maryland just had an earthquake and was preparing for Hurricane Irene. UMBC sent out a survey for random roommate selection, and not unlike match.com, selected Sam and I as likely roommates. We moved in, Irene came and went and we remained roommates for our remaining years at UMBC. In that time, we established a friendship for a lifetime that no hurricane or earthquake could quiver. Fun Fact: I have a retired racing greyhound named Casey.

Katy Schmidt lives in Portland, OR and works as a process engineer for Nike. Her family has been close friends with the Doolens for as long as she can remember. Nicole and Katy especially bonded over Progressive Dinners, carpools, and years of soccer. After their high school soccer days were over, they started their running journeys together. And although Nicole has far surpassed Katy, she completed Hood to Coast this past summer and has a few other relays on the horizon!

Sam and I met at running practice after I transferred to UMBC in 2013. We quickly bonded over Twista and Kanye West's classic "Overnight Celebrity" as we ran hundreds of miles together through Patapsco State Park. Along with Kit Kearney, the 3 of us were roommates our final 2 years at UMBC and stayed close after graduation...some would say a little too close as I slept on Kit and Sam's couch for several months after graduating a semester before them. Fun Fact: Sam and I ran our one and only ultra-marathon together in 2015. Sam remains the only person to ever pass me in a race, while I was going the wrong way.

Stephanie (“Spittman/Spitty” to Nicole) and Nicole squandered nearly a year of friendship as they sat silently through breakfast nearly every day freshmen year at Elon. Fortunately, Campus Rec (and vacuuming the gym floor) brought them together. Throughout their time at Elon, they became closer as they shared their love of fitness and APO, nerded out in shared exercise science classes, and obsessed over Christmas socks and cookie decorating. Postgrad, as part of the infamous Stefph Sandwich, they regularly videochat and occasionally even see each other in person! Stephanie is absolutely thrilled to celebrate with Nicole and Sam and is also extremely grateful that they waited until she returned from her year in London to get married.

Sam and I met in Physical Therapy School. We became close friends not only through school, but also living together as roommates for 2 years. A little bit of information about me, I enjoy everything related to combat sports and my favorite sport is Mixed Martial Arts. An interesting fact is, I remember when Sam and Nicole first met. Sam rushed out of the kitchen while we were having a conversation to help Nicole move something into her apartment. Next thing I saw was Sam riding away in her car and the rest is history.

Nicole and Stefanie became friends late into their first year at Elon after several failed friendship opportunities, including an iconic Fall Break camping trip through Campus Rec, the organization that would later become one of their favorite places on campus. Eventually, their love of APO, Christmas cookie decorating sessions, and crispy tofu brought them together. Stefanie continues to encourage Nicole's sweet potato obsession and the two enjoy postgrad hangouts with Spittman as the famed group, Stefph Sandwich. Stefanie is thrilled to celebrate with Nicole and Sam (and to take this exciting study break from the abyss that is medical school)!

I met Sam in physical therapy school when I was searching for roommates in the UDPT Facebook group. I knew Sam and I would get along when I saw in one of his Facebook photos that he ran cross country. Being roommates and classmates, we soon became friends and I was introduced to Nicole shortly after starting classes. Fun Fact: I enjoy fly fishing.
