How We Met

When You Know, You Know

It was a Saturday in late March when Jackson stopped by Press Cafe for a cup of Coffee. With no plans for the day, he decided to stay and have breakfast. It was then that he noticed a woman sitting a few seats down, enjoying breakfast and reading her kindle. About that time, the barista came walking by. The woman tried to get her attention, and when the barista did not notice and kept walking, the woman made a face and said “Welp okay then”. Jackson laughed, and just like that their first conversation began…and they haven't stopped yapping with each other since. As they chatted, Jackson couldn’t help but notice her bright blue eyes and easy, contagious laughter. Jennifer had fully gotten his attention. Soon after, a couple approached, hoping to sit in the empty seats between them. “Do you want us to move down so y’all can keep chatting?” they asked. Jackson paused, waiting for Jennifer’s answer. “No,” she said with a pleasant smile. Humbled- but undeterred- Jackson kept the conversation going across the couple, who had now taken their seats. They began discussing their March Madness brackets, and Jackson couldn’t figure out the app on his phone… This would not be the last time Jennifer would need to assist Jackson due to his technological inefficiencies. He walked down the counter toward her, she took his phone and began helping him compare their picks. As the conversation continued—and as Jackson squeezed in beside her—the couple finally laughed and said, “Okay, we’re going to move down now.” It was then that Jackson had an idea... “I’ll tell you what...” he said, “I bet you ten bucks my bracket beats yours.” She smiled, shook his hand… and gave him her number—just so they could settle the bet, of course. That afternoon, Jackson called Jennifer and asked if she could meet him back at Press the next morning—this time on purpose. Ten months later, Jackson and Jennifer stood in the same spot they’d met. Instead of a bustling Saturday morning, it was late on a Saturday night. The two of them stood in the silence of the empty cafe as Jackson said “I’ll tell you what...” He reached into his pocket, pulled out a ring, and got down on one knee.
