YES! Make sure your passport will not expire at least 6 months after date of travel.
Yes! We've been here several times and not once have we ever felt unsafe. Locals, including the ex-pat Americans who live there permanently, are very friendly and welcoming to tourists. But as always, we would ask that you be alert when you are traveling internationally and stay with groups when walking around at night. We also recommend traveling during the day given that there is a 1.5 hour drive from the airport to SMA.
San Miguel in April is beautiful! The average temperature during this time ranges from 78-85 degrees during the day. While it will be warm, we also suggest packing a light jacket for the evenings - it will cool down into the high 50s.
We know that time away from home and work is precious, so we recommend making the most of your trip and staying as long as you can! With that being said, given San Miguel is so small, you can see most of the town in 3 days. Have extra time and want to explore more? Mexico City is just a few hours drive away and gorgeous beaches are a short flight away.
Sadly, NO. Stick to bottled water to be safe. We even brush our teeth with bottled water while in Mexico - better to be safe than sorry. Most hotels will have filtered water, and most AirBnBs provide drinkable water - check with them before arriving. We also recommend avoiding street foods. While authentic street tacos may smell delicious as you're walking by, it likely won't be cooked using filtered water. A note on ice: Yes, the ice is generally safe. San Miguel is full of visitors, so any hotel or restaurant you visit will be using ice made from purified water.
See "Schedule" tab for attire. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes as the streets are mainly cobblestone. San Miguel is a very walkable city - you will be doing A LOT of walking. LADIES: Pointy heels are not recommended for walking on the cobblestone streets. But we understand that the temptation can be hard to resist, so make sure to pack an extra pair of sneaks if you do not heed our advice. Heels, cobblestone hills, and tequila are a recipe for disaster! Think sneakers or comfortable sandals during the day and a block heel, wedges, or flats for the evenings.
We do NOT recommend renting a car. San Miguel is a relatively small, dense town with narrow cobblestone streets, and parking is extremely hard to come by. There are ubers and cabs throughout the city. See Travel & Accommodations for transportation to and from the airport.
If you don't have it already, we HIGHLY recommend downloading WhatsApp on your phone. It is a free international messaging app (similar to texting). Most of the transportation companies, restaurants, hotels and airbnbs will use this app to communicate with you about your upcoming reservations and travel plans. It's extremely helpful and straightforward to use!
To allow all guests the ability to relax and really let loose, we have chosen to make our special weekend of events adults only. We hope you will understand our decision and take the opportunity to let your hair down, kick up your heels, and celebrate in style!
Speaking from personal experience, Jack gives this one a hard no. San Miguel's charming cobblestone streets and narrow sidewalks may be beautiful, but they are not so friendly to crutches, scooters, or wheelchairs. All joking aside, try not to break your leg if you're planning to attend.
