We were in 7th grade at separate schools when we got invited to a surprise birthday party for a mutual friend of ours. All the girls told me that Jack was trouble and to steer clear. That only made me more curious and we instantly became friends. After finding out that our parents went to college together, we felt we had even more of a reason to be friends. Even after Jack moved to Jackson only a few months later, we would still Skype and facebook message every day it seemed. We kept up the sweetest friendship all through grade school, through our various dating relationships, and even kept in touch during college. We would visit each other here and there but we were always just friends. On my 21st birthday, Jack showed up at my birthday party, unannounced, and that sparked what we didn't know would become the greatest adventure of our lives. We started dating about a month later and just figured we'd "give it a shot". About a month into our relationship, we both knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives with each other. December 17, 2019 will be our 10 year "friend-iversary" and we are SO glad we decided to go to that birthday party all those years ago.
Jack has always been good at surprises. He's a great actor and even when I think I know what he's up to, he totally flips the script. This is exactly what happened the night he proposed. I had a pretty bad week at work, so Jack told me he would take me out to dinner on Thursday night to cheer me up. He told me to wear something a little nicer than my every day work clothes and we would go to Longhorn because he had a gift card. He even offered to pay for me to get my nails done but I just didn't have time. I left work and headed to meet Jack so that we could ride together to dinner. We went to dinner and had a great time. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. We finished eating and he asked if I wanted to see his grandmother's barn (side note: Nona's barn is a big beautiful white barn that used to be used for weddings and events and they were getting ready to sell it-- Jack had been cleaning it all week). I told him I would love to see it, but I knew he had a test to study for, so I told him we would be quick. We got to Nona's barn and he opened the doors to reveal the most beautiful set up--complete with a truck full of quilts and pillows, rose petals, candles, and string lights. The works. On the truck bed was the memory journal I gave Jack for Valentine's Day. He filled it with the sweetest memories and had me read it. At the end of the journal, he asked me to marry him! I turned around, and there he was on one knee. I said yes! He told me that he had my family waiting at his house for us all to celebrate! Then, we took the truck out and watched the stars, which is what we did on our first date. It was the best night of my life. I had no idea it was coming!
