In Orthodox Christian weddings, the Bride and Groom select a Koumbara (female) or Koumbaro (male) to "sponsor" the marriage. The Koumbara plays a significant role during the marriage ceremony by participating in the sacred ritual that unites the man and woman in Christ. The Koumbara plays a practical role and a spiritual role. The Koumbara takes responsibility for helping to organize the details of the wedding but more importantly the role of the Koumbara is to be a support and spiritual guide to the couple throughout their marriage.
