This was literally the sweetest gesture. The two of us had motives. I wanted to give him a birthday dinner, and unbeknownst to me, he planned a surprise proposal.
Ivory and I met maybe in our early teens through church. He and I were fully platonic until recently… like a couple years ago. We tried to communicate, but the timing was off; either he and I were in a relationship with other people, or either we knew we weren’t ready. Ivory started asking to take me to dinner after church and I would always tell him no… Mainly because I was on my healing journey and I thought that maybe he wouldn’t be willing to join with me, and that was what I needed… FINALLY! One Sunday I said yes to his dinner proposal and the rest was history. Let me go back to the dinner… First of all, we tried to go somewhere lowkey, but when we got to the restaurant, my brother and his girlfriend were there. Jokes on us! But we took it as a sign…Ivory and I talked to each other unlike any person I’ve ever communicated with. It just flowed, you know? I believe once we announced that we were a couple, everyone loved the thought of us being together. I prayed for someone who would be open, considerate, know what the adjective “love” meant, and be forgiving. I prayed for a friend and a literal helpmate…AND someone I could always laugh with. God gave me Ivory.
