When Harry Met Bailey

A Tale of Two Meetings

The first time we met, Harry was in disbelief that I knew where Jupiter was (roughly) but did not know where West Palm Beach was. At the time, i naively thought everything south of Orlando was the same - I now know better. At the end of the conversation, Harry invited me to come to his bar (Ken’s Tavern) the following week during his happy hour shift so he could buy me a drink. At the time, I honestly didn't believe that he worked there because I frequented that same bar almost every weekend, and had never seen him. But lo and behold, there he was working behind the bar on that Friday afternoon. After a small pep talk from my roommates, I walked up to the bar to order a drink (my second, because I needed a minute). The first thing I noticed, and that most people would’ve noticed, was Harry’s *vibrant* Hawaiian shirt. Trying to organically strike up a conversation, I complimented said shirt with the incredibly original line: “I like your shirt.”, to which he replied, “I like your smile.” We made small talk and he then introduced himself: “I’m Harry''. I realized very quickly that I was alone in remembering that we’d already met, but before I could think of a witty remark, I responded, “I know, we met last weekend.” I recounted the tale of our conversation regarding my limited geographical knowledge of Florida, and the drink that was promised. Harry apologized, and re-promised he’d buy me a proper drink between getting off his happy hour shift and starting his next shift next door (at Red Rocks). By the time we made it to Red Rocks, I was very much on my way to not remembering that evening. In order to make sure Harry didn’t forget me for a third time, I proceeded to write down my name and number on as many bar napkins as I could get my hands on, and proceeded to hand them individually to him as he worked. Harry likes to humble-brag and say that it was his worst night in sales EVER, but in the end, it was obviously worth it.
