Two anxious people walk onto a plane...

12.23.2014

It was Christmas Eve 2014. We were both on our way to New England to be with our families. Both sufferers of flight anxiety, Jenn would typically drink enough mini wine to match a bottle, while Mikey would zone out to Bon Iver and Super Mario. As Jenn boarded the plane early per usual, Mikey was rushing back to security after forgetting his license. While Jenn settled into her seat, headphones in and pug on lap, Mikey made it on the plane with minutes to spare. As Mikey made his way to his seat, he noticed a "cute girl and even cuter dog." He was excited to be sitting next to them, while Jenn was angry the open seat next to her was now taken. They found that on a flight where most were sleeping, they engaged in conversation until the wheels touched down in Boston. After hours of discussing friends they had in common, ghost stories, and the realization they lived three blocks from one another, Jenn and Mikey became friends on Facebook and went their separate ways. Jenn would later come to find out how close Mikey was to asking Jenn and her mom for a ride to Nana and Papa's in Stoneham. After the holidays and back in Denver, Jenn reached out to her "plane buddy." Mikey likes to say he knew he liked Jenn from the moment she showed up to watch the finale of Parks and Recreation wearing bright yellow sweatpants and a sweatshirt adorned in hot dogs and french fries. Little did they know that night would turn into their first date.

The Proposal

4.21.18

Jenn has bad luck when it comes to restaurants in Denver. If she says a place is her "new favorite," the establishment will close within a few weeks. After finding The Broker, a restaurant in a closed bank vault, Mikey and Jenn visited several times per year. They had a favorite appetizer, server, and always had a bottle of champagne. Mikey knew he wanted to propose there, but the curse would soon strike again. With news of The Broker closing, Mikey used his sourcing skills to find out how he could still incorporate the restaurant in his proposal. He reached out to employees of The Broker and even the new property owners. Finding little luck, Mikey soon received great news. Pepe, their favorite waiter who worked at The Broker for three decades, found a new home at Avenue Grill. Mikey recalled a time where he walked by with Jenn and they discussed eating there "One day when they had money." After working with the manager and their favorite waiter, Mikey rented out the El Dorado room, placing flowers on the table and a projector up against the wall. The night consisted of a multi-course meal, bottles of wine, a slideshow of their three years together, and a $10 rose-gold airplane ring that Mikey had bought from Amazon a few days before. In typical fashion, Jenn's engagement ring did not show up on time, but that didn't stop her from saying "Yes," to spending the rest of her life with Mikey.
