Yes, all visitors will need a valid passport to travel to the Dominican Republic. Passports must be valid and not expiring within 6 months of the time you will BE in the Dominican. In the U.S., passports take approximately 4-6 weeks to be returned, after the application. However, with the current USPS delays, we would give it an extra month or two buffer.
Depending on your cell carrier, your cell service might work in the DR with no action needed (international fees may apply). You should call your carrier directly to ask about international cell plan options and pricing.
Yes, US dollars (USD) are widely accepted in the Dominican Republic, particularly in tourist areas, including resorts, hotels, and many restaurants. However, using the local currency, the Dominican Peso (DOP), is recommended for better exchange rates and smaller, local purchases. There are currency exchange sites at the airport, and you can also exchange currency in the U.S. airport before you depart. Some areas accept credit cards - you should check with your credit card company before you leave to find out about travel "alerts" and/or international exchange fees.
The official language in the DR is Spanish. In larger cities, you'll find many who also speak English. If you do not speak or understand Spanish, you can download translation apps in advance to help with any language barriers.
