The vineyards of Tuscany produce prestigious wines. In this area, some of the best Tuscan wines renowned around the world are produced.Using Bolgheri as a base, you can stop by a number of top wine estates in the area (reservations are required), among them Ornellaia, founded by Lodovico Antinori and now owned by another great Italian wine family, the Frescobaldis.
We definitely suggest a drive along the famous Viale dei Cipressi (Cypress Avenue) that leads to Bolgheri. This is a scenic, straight avenue, about 5 km long, bordered by majestic and ancient cypresses which end in front of the castle of Bolgheri. It connects the old Via Aurelia to the village.
From the Piombino and Livorno ports you can catch the ferry to visit the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago such as Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Pianosa, Giannutri, Gorgona and Sant’Elena.
Summer is the season for open-air food festivals (“sagre”) in Tuscany: there are tons of gastronomic festivals running in August. Tuscany has its own unique food in Italy, besides the pasta and bread staples, try the unique foods like- cannellini beans, handmade spaghetti and ribolleta – A vegetable and bread based soup.
