Matt and Kelly officially met each other in July 2020 through an online dating app. They actually had met many months before, in August 2019 when Kelly went (one time) to Matt's weekly pick up ultimate frisbee league on a Tuesday night. There, she met Matt and Kedzie for the very first time, and they played on a team together for a couple of hours. The game's intensity was a bit more than Kelly was bargaining for, and she never returned to the field for pick-up again. Fast forward to summer 2020. June 2020, Matt was spending his COVID time building out a Sprinter van for life on the road with his dog, and Kelly was in Michigan visiting family and friends after many months of distance. They came across each other on the dating app. Kelly recalled being silently interested in Matt that night at frisbee, and gained some new intel from the app that he also had some pretty similar interests to her own. Matt liked Kelly's banter and adventurous spirit, and they connected. They set up a time to meet in Humboldt Park when Kelly returned to Chicago - July 6, 2020. They took a walk, sat in the park with a blanket and some wine, chatted until the sun went down, and continued chatting, deciding to set up a second date.
