Imani and Tyrone first crossed paths at Trinity United Church of Christ. Tyrone was serving as the Associate Minister for Young Adults and Campus Ministry, while Imani—practically born into Trinity—had been attending her whole life. Wanting to keep things professional, Tyrone waited until he transitioned from his role at Trinity before making a move. In the meantime, he made sure to tell Imani “Happy Birthday” every single year—his not-so-sneaky way of keeping the lines of communication open (and maybe sneaking in a little flirting too). His first official attempt? He casually asked Imani what she was doing for her Sorority’s Founders' Day. Unfortunately, she had celebrated the night before and had no plans to go out—Tyrone still jokes that she stood him up. His second attempt came during a more solemn occasion: the funeral of Trinity’s beloved youth pastor. Tyrone had hoped to reconnect at the after-service gathering, but Imani arrived fashionably late, throwing off his timing again. Finally, on Super Bowl Sunday 2023, Tyrone decided it was time to go for it and asked if he could give Imani a call. That one call turned into hours of conversation, and by the end of it, he asked her on a date. She said yes—and they’ve been inseparable ever since. For their first date, Tyrone found a restaurant that could accommodate Imani’s vegan lifestyle at the time. While the food wasn’t exactly memorable, the company was unforgettable. On August 16, 2024, Tyrone proposed during a special night out at Gibson’s Italia, overlooking the Chicago River.
