From the moment Maria Elena laid eyes on Brandon, she knew he was the love of her life. Though they started as just friends, deep down she knew she found her person. What she didn’t know was that Brandon was doing his best to play it cool, hiding just how crazy he was about her. So when he finally asked her out on their first date, she couldn’t have been more excited to say yes. Keep in mind, dinner at Panera was considered a luxury for two college kids. He showed up at her door covered in snow after walking a mile through a Buffalo storm. Maria Elena was quick to overlook the cast on his arm when she noticed that he came baring gifts in the form of Oreos and nachos. After dinner, they stayed up all night, snacking and talking about everything and nothing. The second time they hung out, Brandon showed her the song Beyond by Leon Bridges. The meaning behind the lyrics was crystal clear— they were both falling fast. Over the next week or so, Maria Elena found every excuse to see Brandon (ex., she didn’t want to drive alone at night, needed help with flashcards, cooked extra food, or was just in the neighborhood). Meanwhile, Brandon was working up the courage to ask a very important question. On February 17th, he officially asked Maria Elena to be his girlfriend—after postponing by a day because he knew she preferred odd numbers. Sadly, their happy bubble couldn't last forever. On March 13th, 2020, UB announced that students would be taking an “extended spring break to avoid the spread of COVID-19.” Brandon tried to freeze time before saying goodbye in Capen Library, (while onlookers watched his future bride bawl her eyes out). Most seniors just mourned missing graduation, but Brandon was preparing to miss out on his chance at love. Through the long-distance and anxiety about the future, they built something lasting.
