Travel by Air

Option 1: You can fly into Vancouver Airport (YVR) then take a ferry to Vancouver Island (see Ferry Travel and Reservation details below), then drive to the town of Port Alberni. The choice root would be to go to Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal (30 minute drive from the airport) and sail to Duke Point. It will be about a 1.5 hour drive to Sproat Lake/Port Alberni. Option 2: Fly into Vancouver Airport to Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal (a minimum 1 hour to 1.5 hour drive while also having to go through downtown Vancouver and over bridges where there can be slow moving traffic especially if rush hour) and saild to Departure Bay. About 1.5 hours to Sproat Lake/Port Alberni. OR Option 3: You can fly DIRECTLY to Vancouver Island via Victoria Airport (YYJ) (no Ferry). It will take approximately a 3 hour drive to Sproat Lake. Option 4: Fly directly to Vancouver Island via Nanaimo Airport (YCD) (no ferry). Approximately a 1.5 hour drive to Sproat Lake/Lake Alberni. Option 5: Fly directly to Vacounver Island via Comox Valley Airport (YQQ) (no ferry). Approximately a 1.5 hour drive to Sproat Lake/Lake Alberni.

Travel by Sea (Ferry)

BC Ferries are the main connection between Vancouver Island and the mainland. From Vancouver, there are several ferry options: • Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay (4 km north of Nanaimo): 1 hour 40 minutes sailing • Tsawwassen to Duke Point (12 km south of Nanaimo): 2 hours sailing • Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay (about 30km north of Victoria): 1 hour and 35 minutes sailing **You will want to reserve your ferry ahead of time and can do so on the website** You can find more information about BC ferries, their timetable, and prices on the website (click view button below). The ferry ride is a beautiful route and experience! You may even spot a killer whale along the way. Port Alberni is a 90-minute drive from Nanaimo and a 3 hour drive from Swartz Bay.

Driving to Sunset Island from Port Alberni

It is approximately a 50 minute (28 kilometers) drive from Port Alberni to Sunset Island which is on Sproat Lake.
