There we were, sitting across from each other in Honors history class. Posing for a photo together beside the campus fountain. Eating lunch together in the dining hall with friends. We were classmates, we were acquaintances, we were almost even friends. But we were soulmates – we just didn't even know it yet. So we graduated from USM and we went our separate ways. Meanwhile, the stars kept turning and turning. And then they finally aligned. For our first date, we drove all the way out to St. Francisville. It was the dead of summer. We hiked at Clark’s Creek, spied on damselflies in the creek bed, toured a haunted house, drove down to the bank of the Mississippi and watched the river and listening to cicadas, drank beer with a perfect stranger on their porch in the middle of nowhere, ate cheap Chinese food together, then called it a day. But the stars kept on turning. Patrick found his path taking him to New York for a job. Our first date looked like it would also be our last one. We played it cool. Months passed. Then, as luck would have it, Maggie won a sweepstakes to a publishing convention in New York, and it wasn’t too long before she found herself working there too. (You can’t make these things up.) From then on out, we’ve been glued at the hip. Our first date set the bar high; since then, our dates have taken us all over New York City and the US and to Europe, South America, Africa, over countless trails and in all weather. And that’s only the beginning.
