Some attendees arrived in Dallas the day before NYF started and met up at Salt Light. Olivia introduced herself and offered some food she brought for those that arrived early, then proceeded to a well-lit area to take pictures of her food. Sam also introduced himself but chose to sit around with the others, catching up with them. The two would chat here and there throughout the event.
Sam was praying one night, asking God that He would find someone for him. The next afternoon, to Sam's surprise, he received an email from a marriage coordinator asking if he was available or willing to be introduced. Sam responded saying that he would need a week to think and pray about it. However, for Sam, the curiosity was killing him. While he was still praying about the email, he spent the better part of the week to find out who this person could be. Right before the week ended, Sam happened to see a Facebook story that Olivia posted. Olivia then messaged Sam about the picture and they started talking. They talked for three hours, non-stop, catching up from what they did, to their thoughts about church, to who they are as a person. Sam was intrigued at Olivia's responses because they echoed many of Sam's thoughts on an ideal spouse. Later that week, Sam asked Olivia if it was okay for them to start a relationship together and ask the marriage coordinator to mediate. She said, "uhhhh...okay, but let's pray about it"
Sam and Olivia were invited to a wedding at Olivia's local church. Months before Sam flew in to attend the wedding, he made many plans in case schedule during the day changed. He had bought a ring along with a ring box with the inscription "May 1?" because it looked like "May I?" Sam knew Olivia would love the pun. Since Olivia loved surprises, she would randomly suggest things Sam could do to surprise her. Every time Olivia suggested something, Sam would have to cross out his plan and go with his back up plans. The day Sam was going to propose, Olivia and Sam were supposed to go take some photos together at a park. Sam bought flowers, brought his tripod, his new Pixel phone, and stuffed them in his backpack. Olivia didn't know a thing. Then, Olivia said, "Hey, change of plans, we're going to meet up with a church friend because she's able to meet with us now". Sam ran out of backup plans. They went from the visitation, to dinner with her parents, to being invited to celebrate her father's birthday at her house. By that point, Sam had 15 minutes before May 1st ended. He asked Olivia to drive him back to the Airbnb and asked Olivia to open her trunk. Sam brought out the card, flowers, and a ring box. He handed her the flowers and the card and just held Olivia saying "AHHHH! What do I do now???" He proposed right there, right in front of her house, behind her car, and in the dark street. Olivia said yes! Sam was elated not only because of Olivia's answer, but also because he had just over a minute left before midnight.
