Unsure what to expect? Find our must-know information below - Unless you have experience driving in Peru, do NOT rent your own car. Plan to rely on a taxi service like Cabify or Uber. - Lima has infamously horrible traffic. Allocate 45-60 minutes for travel time (pretty much wherever you go). Don't let yourself stress out while sitting in traffic - it's part of the Lima experience! - You can brush your teeth and shower with the tap water as normal. However, do NOT drink the tap water. Purchase boxed or bottled water from local stores for drinking. - Best local grocery store - Wong. They are likely to have any necessities you may need - Local currency is the Peruvian Sol (1 sol = $0.29). Plan ahead for currency exchange (exchanging at the airport is the most convenient, but the worst value. Exchanging ahead of time at a local bank in the US is likely the best option). - Most restaurants in Miraflores accept credit cards, but always carry soles for street food, markets, and smaller spots. - Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. 10% is standard at sit-down restaurants. - Download Google Maps offline for Lima before you land - this is helpful when data is spotty
