They met in 2018 while working together at a restaurant. What began as an amazing friendship complete with light bullying, constant banter, and suspiciously frequent “coincidental” run-ins slowly turned into something more. Devon knew early on. She was always sure. Adam, however, is the kind of man who takes 10–15 business days to decide which shampoo to buy, so naturally, he took his time. On November 22, 2020, he finally asked Devon to be his girlfriend, and from that moment on, life decided to test them in every possible way. First, they lived in 600 square feet with four animals. That didn’t break them, so they figured they could handle anything. Then came 2022, when life said, “Let’s flood your house, destroy all your belongings… and do it on Christmas Eve.” Through it all, Adam was a rock. He is endlessly optimistic, deeply understanding, and genuinely kind, the only person who can pull Devon out of her head when she spirals into worst-case scenarios. Devon is famously not an optimist, but she will be the first to say Adam makes her human. He slows time down for her and brings her into the present… unless the topic is food. Adam is never just thinking about the present meal, he’s already planning dinner three Tuesdays from now and possibly something specific on February 20, 2027. Over the past six years, they faced career changes, family loss, and challenges they once thought might be too much. Instead of breaking them, it made them stronger. Devon feels profoundly safe with Adam...especially because he remains calm in truly any situation. Including the time his arm was dislocated while white water rafting, followed by a mile-long hike up a mountain and the bumpiest 30-minute car ride imaginable… all with his arm out of its socket. Calm. Steady. Unbothered. So when May 18, 2025 rolled around and they prepared for their usual Sunday hike, Devon knew something was off... because Adam was not calm. Why was he showering before a hike? Why didn’t he want to bring the dogs? And why was he acting suspicious when Devon casually asked (for the hundredth time that month) when he was going to propose? At the midpoint of their hike, at their favorite overlook, a spot they had visited over a hundred times.. Adam started acting even stranger. He asked, “Have I ever told you how much I love you?” You’d think Devon would have caught on, but unfortunately, she was distracted by a man fishing who had just caught a massive fish. She replied, “Well, only when I ask you,” and turned around to see Adam on one knee. Neither of them remembers exactly what was said next. Everything went black.. except for the shine of that diamond. Devon said yes (at least ten times), possibly shouted a few profanities (forgive her), and Adam pulled off the perfect proposal with the help of Devon’s best friend Reba, who hid behind a trash can to secretly capture the moment. And their story doesn’t end here. Every day is still a new beginning. On February 20, 2027, they’ll officially become Devon and Adam Bortner and the adventure will continue.
