It was our first year of high school: English class with Mr. Mason. Sabs' first memory of Phuoc was on the first day of school. She remembers Mr. Mason taking attendance and stumbling on Phuoc's name. "It's pronounced like 'Luke,' but with an 'F'," Phuoc said with the goofiest grin on his face. Sabs' first impression was that Phuoc was a confident, funny guy... with a funny name. Phuoc's first memory of Sabs was a pretty girl who arrived two weeks into the school year (she just came back from Paris). Her demeanor and beauty drew Phuoc's adolescent brain to one conclusion, "Dang, who's that?" This simple, but strong urge propelled Phuoc to find any way to strike up a conversation with a young Sabs. As their freshman year went on, they began talking more often in the classroom and bonded over the Percy Jackson book series, Fall Out Boy, and Ultimate Frisbee. During one Ultimate tournament, they sat next to each other on the bus. Sabs was messing around with Phuoc's phone (because he had a fun password pattern) and she put her number in his phone without telling him. A few weeks later, their English class had a partner project to re-imagine the infamous balcony scene from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. They chose to be partners, and when Phuoc asked for Sabs' number to communicate for the project, he was surprised to find out her number was already in his phone. They started texting each other every day - of course, to work on their project, and also to talk about any and everything else. Suffice it to say, they aced their balcony scene assignment. By the end of their first year, they were texting everyday, sitting next to each other in English class, talking to each other in the hallways, and hanging out at Ultimate Frisbee practices. On May 21st, 2014, Phuoc pulled Sabs aside before Ultimate Frisbee practice started, and they sat at the picnic tables of Frontier Park. He asked her to be his girlfriend, and they've been together ever since. Two years later, a conversation with Mr. Mason uncovered that he sat them next to each other purposefully. Thanks, Mr. Mason - the ultimate wingman!
