COVID UPDATE

First - we are so excited to see all of you! We would like to encourage wedding guests who are not vaccinated to obtain a home rapid test from CVS, Walmart, or Walgreens (linked below) 3 days prior to our event as well as wear a mask. This is out of concern for family members who have underlying health conditions whom we would like to feel as comfortable as possible at our event. How We Met.

by Kaipo

One Day, we met in a first responder class a week into our first year of DPT graduate school at MUSC in Charleston (although Holly doesn't seem to remember this encounter). We quickly became friends and bonded over good food, good music, and our good group of friends. During those first few months, our friendship grew. Between classes, we'd sneak off to coffee shops and talk about everything under the Charleston sun. We went to concerts, cooked so much ramen, and spent nights on the Cannon Street porch. One Day, I found out I needed a 90% on his pathophysiology final to pass the Spring semester otherwise, I'd be forced to take a year off. Realizing that I'd been developing a crush on Holly, I knew I needed a very clear head in order to pass this class. Study sessions together turned more into quality time over home cooked meals. Knowing what I had to do, I asked Holly to come back to the Cannon Street porch one night after a big party they threw featuring homemade Korean BBQ tacos. I brought my thoughts to the surface and told Holly that I'd caught some feelings for her in the last few months. Holly let me down very gracefully, complete with morning after text and all. (really y'all, she was really kind about it). With a clear mind and broken heart, I ended up passing his final (with exactly a 90% like what) and therefore moved onto year two of PT school with the class. In the summer, everyone seemed to flip a switch and things started clicking in class. We were all getting used to what the workload meant and we all cruised toward our first round of clinical rotations. I was assigned to the upstate of SC and Holly ended up back home in the Maryland-DC area. We had stayed friends through the summer with some healthy space, but both of us considered the other as one of the closest friends they'd made in Charleston.

How We Started.

One Day, I got a call from Guam. I was needed back home and made arrangements with MUSC to take a voluntary gap year to help take care of my sick mother and operate as the managing partner for a coffee shop that my dad acquired called The Hive. I contacted all of my friends and told them of my plans to move back. I even gave out Field Notes book as a token of appreciation for their friendship. All of them except for Holly. I wanted to tell Holly in person, so I made arrangements to visit her in DC for the weekend. What I left out was that I wasn't going back to SC but was on my way to Guam, bags fully packed and all. So the first night after dinner with her parents and our friend Nicole, I handed Holly a note written in the back of Field Notes book explaining everything. I knew when I handed her that notebook, I would have closure on how she felt about me. When she finished reading the note, she looked back at me. In that moment, we both knew that we were losing something we each held very close to our hearts once I left. The rest of the weekend was filled with long walks throughout DC and Arlington. It was a beautiful day in DC, so we naturally made the most of it, however confused we were about what tomorrow held. On the Sunday morning I left, it was raining. We found ourselves rushing out the door, headed for the Dulles airport. On the car ride, we talked and let it all out in the open. Our friendship seemed to be becoming something more and this time, we were in an unspoken agreement and mutual fear of the unknown. On the curbside of the noisy, busy, and rainy Dulles airport departure bay, we shared a moment unlike any other moment we'd shared before. We didn't know what was lying ahead of us, but we knew that One Day, we'd figure out if this was all worth pursuing. One Day, we'd be back together. One Day it would all make sense. That One Day is on May 30th, 2021. We want you to join us to celebrate this One Day with us.

The Engagement.

by Holly

One Day, in May of 2020, Kaipo told me we were going out to the Blue Ridge Parkway for a photoshoot with our good friends, The Oshiros. Under the guise that we were "helping them build their portfolio" for their blooming wedding photo and film business, we headed 2 hours northwest of Greenville. Naturally, I insisted we take my Subaru Outback at the last minute because it was more equipped for a drive through the mountains than Kaipo's Toyota Corolla (which he had just cleaned and filled with gas, little to my knowledge). As we make out way up the steep and winding roads, we quickly realize my car is very low on gas. Before long the orange light on my dashboard lights up and tells us to fill up, but we are still at least 40 minutes out and surely will miss the sunset with even a short detour. We keep moving, Kaipo getting fidgety and quiet the closer we get to the mountain. We see a small gas station up ahead and I suggest a quick stop, but Kaipo refuses and we keep moving. When we finally park at the base of the mountain, the car is running on fumes. We turn it off and push it out of our minds so we can focus on time with our friends. We start heading up the mountain, me in a denim dress and high top sneakers and Kaipo in jeans and a button up shirt. As uncomfortable as Kaipo and I both are in front of the lens, we had a blast with our friends, and the sunset was absolutely stunning. Soon enough I was being whisked away to an outcropping overlooking the valley below us. From here, the rest is history! Kaipo got down on one knee, I said yes at some point, and I got to add a new piece of jewelry to my collection. We quickly headed down the mountain and back to the car. Still running on empty, we make our way down the twisting and winding roads with our friends close behind in case we break down. Needless to say, we made it out safely. So, this leads us to where we are now. We are so excited to get married and to have everyone we love with us for this day!
