Our Love Story

Grant and Clare both grew up surrounded by maroon. Third-generation Aggies, raised in families where tradition ran deep, learned early what loyalty, faith, and love were supposed to look like. From the time he was a young boy, Grant dreamed of attending Texas A&M, and quietly hoped that somewhere in Aggieland he would one day find someone who loved the school and him just as deeply. Their college journeys didn’t begin the way either of them imagined. Both struggled, both questioned, and both had to learn to trust that the path unfolding in front of them was leading somewhere meaningful. In time, it was. Grant threw himself into everything Texas A&M had to offer, and Clare found her calling again, a renewed purpose to become a teacher. Their story first started in August 2023 at a mutual friend’s 21st birthday party in College Station. After a brief introduction, it was just two lives crossing without knowing how important that moment would someday be. Over a year later, in September 2024, fate gave them a second chance. They reconnected at a Texas A&M football game, forgetting they had already met. Grant reintroduced himself at his family’s tailgate, and something clicked. Later that day, he told his father he was determined to keep talking to Clare. Grant jokingly asked Clare if she would bake him his favorite pound cake if he bought her a pan. They went their separate ways for the game, but Grant couldn’t stop talking about her, wondering if he’d ever see her again. After the Aggies won, per usual, Grant and his friends headed to the Dixie Chicken to celebrate. Not expecting anything, when they walked in, Clare was there. From that moment until nearly 2:00 a.m., they did not stop talking to each other. The next morning, Grant half-jokingly told his friends he’d found his wife. He asked Clare on a date that lasted almost seven hours. Grant was old-school, and so was Clare, raised by families who had grown old together, and neither of them was willing to settle. Despite his mother’s and sister’s warnings not to scare her off, Grant couldn’t help himself and talked about music and history, his two passions, on the first date. Clare was intrigued by both and listened to Grant talk on and on about it. She asked Grant what he wanted to do with his future, and he said “politics,” which leads to a key factor down the road. They sat at Gringo’s for hours without touching their food, then ate ice cream and listened to music in Grant’s truck late into the night. When Clare cried to “She’s Got You” by Patsy Cline, Grant knew she was the one for him. They became inseparable. Soon after, Grant invited Clare onto the field for Midnight Yell, where they shared their first kiss when the lights went out. Time moved fast. Grant graduated in December 2024 but stayed an extra semester just to be close to Clare. When a job opportunity came in Bossier City, Louisiana, he told her he wouldn’t take it if she didn’t want him to go. Loving him the way she did, Clare encouraged him to chase his dream. They promised each other weekends, and they kept that promise every single one, despite others around them saying long-distance relationships are at best difficult. As time moved on into the start of Clare's senior year at Texas A&M, Grant knew he wanted to propose before the holidays, in the place he had always dreamed of. As the Aggie tradition states, a couple who gets engaged under the Century Tree will have a marriage that lasts a lifetime. On November 8, 2025, beneath the Century Tree in the heart of Aggieland, Grant asked Clare to spend forever with him. It was the beginning of the chapter they had both been unknowingly walking toward all along.
