How We Met

Written in the Stars

Those that know Amir know that the biggest passion of his life is dance and that's how Hina and Amir's story began. It was 2014 and Amir had long stopped performing with his dance team, The Wanted Ashiqz but still continued teaching for weddings and other private events. Meanwhile, two years earlier Hina's cousin Ashish proposed to his long time girl friend Kamini with the wedding date set to May of 2014. During February of 2014, Kamini's sister Annie began searching for a choreographer to teach the two families for Ashish and Kamini’s sangeet and was referred to Amir by her good friend Preyasi. Amir taught Preyasi and her friends a dance for a sangeet back in 2010! Who would've thought that something Amir did in 2010 would eventually lead to Amir meeting Hina five years later. The first practice happened on April 5, 2014. Amir didn't drive at the time so Hina's cousin Kushal volunteered to bring Amir and all the Dilawris to the first practice at Annie's house. This is the first time Amir met Hina. "I still remember the first time I saw Hina. I sat in the front passenger side and Hina sat in the back in the middle. She came in with Rahul so I naturally thought they were a couple since they look nothing alike. I remember her just being loud and very talkative. I didn’t think much of anything at the time. I eventually came to learn that Rahul is her brother and his girlfriend is Taniya." -Amir Throughout the practices Amir was introduced to Hina's entire family and even taught her mom a routine for the sangeet. During practices, Amir always picked on Hina. He made her front and center for Balam Pichkari and always critiqued her extra hard but there was a little a flirtiness behind it. The practices and the eventual performances were indeed very memorable. During the night of the performance, Amir felt bittersweet because as it typically happens during these events, it would probably be the last time Amir saw Hina and her family....

The First Date

Starbucks for the Dunkin' Queen

It was Memorial Day weekend and all the wedding festivities were completed. It was back to the mundane and regular life for Amir. Although the excitement of teaching dance was missing from Amir's life, Amir was missing something more... Hina's energy and smile. What Hina's family didn't know was that during practices, Hina and Amir found something else they had in common over Facebook chat. They both shared a common love for music and Hina introduced Amir to a whole new world of Punjabi music. Although Hina and Amir continued to talk over Facebook messenger, Amir wanted to find a way to meet her in person again. Two weeks after the performance, Amir mustered the courage to ask Hina out on a "date". It wasn't much of a date though since they decided to meet up for coffee at Starbucks. "It was awkward at first. He was my dance teacher a few weeks ago and now all of a sudden we were hanging out... alone. We talked mainly about the dance and about our childhood. As the night went on it just became easier and easier to talk to him. He was sweet and listened to me. He made me feel like we knew each other all our lives. After a long time though I felt a real connection with someone. I was hoping in my heart that our conversation would always continue... and here we are five years later." - Hina

The Proposal

Save the environment!

After 4 and a half years of getting to know one another, it came time to take the relationship to the next step. Amir decided to propose to Hina in September of 2018. To make it special, Amir needed everyone's help. Hina's family means a lot to her and knowing this Amir wanted to make sure her entire north east family and close friends were present for the big day. Not only that, but the proposal had to be picturesque and memorable. "The biggest challenge was to make it a surprise. It is very difficult to surprise this girl so we had to go the extra mile to make the story believable. Her cousin Pooja and best friend Jeet were crucial for this. Pooja invited Hina to a day time Gala event to save the environment at Clark Botanic Gardens. This ensured she was dressed up. Pooja even printed fake tickets and invented a fake guest speaker for the event which made the story believable. Hina's family was at home in their PJ's when she left the house and then they quickly got ready and came to the proposal venue. All this just added to her being completely surprised. When Hina arrived to the park, it was a picture perfect moment. We were surrounded by loved ones and the musicians played "Soch Na Sake" from Airlift in the background. This was the first song she sang to me. I cried, she cried. She said yes. That kicked off a year in planning what will be the most memorable week in both of our lives." -Amir
