How We Met

It all started at Relay for Life in April of 2014. Hilary was attending with her roommates and sorority sisters, while Evan was also there with his roommates and fellow CAB members. Thanks to a few mutual friends, the groups ended up mixing. Evan managed to catch Hilary's eye with his sick dance moves. Hilary asked her roommate Malory, "Who is that guy over by Sam?" Malory answered, 'That's Evan, Sam's roommate." The next day, Hilary and Evan both found themselves at the Student Organization Banquet. Hilary found herself nervously excited to see Evan again. Meanwhile, Evan was asking his roommate Sam, "Who is that girl with Malory?" Sam answered, "That's Hilary, Malory's roommate." That night, Hilary logged onto her social media accounts to find a Facebook friend request and a follow on Twitter from Evan. It wasn't until about a month later that Evan sent Hilary a message on Twitter. She has posted a tweet with a phrase from a John Mayer song, and he replied finishing the lyrics. They continued to message over Twitter until one day Evan finally said, "By the way, if it's easier to just text me.. here's my number." They both went home for the summer, but continued to text. Once they finally returned to campus in the Fall months later, it wasn't until a few weeks into the semester that they finally spoke in person. Hilary was walking back to her house from the gym, sweaty and unkept with no makeup on. Evan was walking back to his dorm down the same street. When they finally saw each other, Evan said "Oh, hi". And Hilary's response was, "So, this is what your voice sounds like." And this is how our story began.

The Proposal

It was late September when Hilary and Evan headed into Milwaukee for what was supposed to be a double date with their favorite couple - Sam and Amanda. Hilary was under the impression that they were having dinner at a new restaurant in the Third Ward. As they parked and headed towards the restaurant, Evan excitedly stated, "Look! It's right by our bridge." This bridge overlooking the river was special to them, as they had gone there on their anniversaries and also for her birthday. Evan said, "We still have a few minutes until our reservation, let's go up there!" While up on the bridge, Evan said, "Did you know I took a picture of you up here almost exactly 3 years ago? Turn around and face the river, I want to take another one like that of you here today." Hilary obliged, and turned to face away from him. Evan quickly snapped a photo, put his phone away, and grabbed the ring. It wasn't until Evan said, "Hey!" and Hilary began to turn around that she realized what was going on. "Baby, will you marry me?" Of course, with tears in her eyes, Hilary excitedly yelled, "YES!" Afterwards, Evan said, "We have to go. We have a dinner reservation, but not here!" On the way towards Tre Rivali, Evan said, "I know you're excited, but lets not post or call or text or do anything of that yet. Let's have an hour of just you and me." They got to Tre Rivali, and the hostess walked them back to the large group dining room towards the back of the restaurant. Hilary then heard the excited screams of her family and Evan's family. Both of the parents, grandparents, and siblings had made the trip from Waupun/Beloit to be there to celebrate. They shared dinner and champagne together, with lots of smiles, tears, and love. It was the most perfect night!
