How We Met

(as told by Kaitlin Quan-Abel)

Before the days of Tommy, there were the days of Single Steph. Single Steph spent most Friday nights sleeping on our [mine and Zach (groomsman)] couch after a night of country dancing. Zach and I were Single Steph's faithful wingmen hoping to find her true love one day. And on one fall Arizona night at Denim and Diamonds in Mesa, that is just what happened.  When we would arrive at a bar, the first thing we would all do is scope the place out for potential fellas for Steph. Something to keep in mind, is that we often gave guys she danced/talked to nicknames (to make it easier to remember them). To be honest, Zach and I didn't care about their real names unless we thought they were going to stick around. For instance, you had "Twenty Three” (because he was 23 years old), "Bird Shirt" (because he wore a shirt covered in birds the night we met him), and “Texas" (because he was from Louisiana...just kidding, he was obviously from Texas). *Cue key character vibes* We arrived at Denim and Diamonds, and with our drinks in hand, we scanned the bar for possible dancing partners for Steph. Immediately, Zach honed in on this big, burly, hunk of a man that Zach dubbed, "Jon Snow". At this moment, the live music started and the dancing began. Although Jon Snow was who Zach and I pushed Steph to go up to and ask to dance, she ended up dancing with none other than, Texas. *eye roll* Zach and I did not like Texas. He was annoying to say the least. But, despite our best efforts to prevent it, Steph kept dancing with him, song after song. Mind you, this whole time, Jon Snow and his group of friends were hanging out just off to the side from where we were standing. Then, the moment happened! Texas had left to get a drink, and Steph and Jon Snow turned towards each other. They awkwardly locked eyes and finger guns commenced. A lot of finger guns. Finger guns pointing at each other, then to themselves, then each other again, and then themselves again. Somehow the two finally made it onto the dance floor together. They looked like they were having a grand ol' time! Imaginary sparks were flying. Zach and I were very excited that Steph and Jon Snow finally happened...finally. We may or may not have been actively celebrating in the background. The song ended and Jon Snow then left to get a drink when none other than Texas returned. To both Zach and my disapproval, Steph started dancing with Texas again for the next song. Out of the corner of my eye I could see Jon Snow looking on. I couldn't let Single Steph's poor decision making with Texas get in the way of possibly finding true love with Jon Snow. So, I went up to Jon Snow, who introduced himself as Dominic, and told him that for the next song, he had to make sure to go dance with Steph. Of course, he was concerned about Texas, assuming that he was Steph's boyfriend. I could not have made it any clearer to Dominic that Texas was in fact NOT Steph's boyfriend, we did not like him, and he had to go. Thankfully, Dominic heeded my stern advice and got back on the dance floor with Steph for a few more songs. Some further awkward moments ensued, like when Zach had to take a Green Tea shot that Texas had bought for Steph (who refused it). Weird moment for all of us. After the last dance of the night, Steph, who was exuding happiness at this point (love was clearly in the air), came off the dance floor after dancing with Dominic and I needed her opinion on him. Was this going somewhere? ME: "How is Dominic?!?" STEPH: "Tommy?" ME: "No, Dominic." STEPH: "You mean, Tooooooommy?" ME: "Dominic? Jon Snow? The guy you were dancing with who wasn't Texas?" STEPH: "Yeah, his name is Tommy." ME: *pure confusion* STEPH/Me: *look at Jon Snow* JOHN SNOW: *wide eyes & awkward half-smile* ENTER TOMMY (aka Jon Snow...aka Dominic)!!! And that my friends, is the story of the last night of Single Steph and the couch sleeping.
