It was the kind of weekend that already felt like a movie. My 33rd birthday turned into a family getaway at a quiet mountain hotel in Puerto Rico, the kind that promised the luxury of doing absolutely nothing but enjoying the moment with the people you love. But my darling had a different thing in mind. He had gathered nearly all of my family (unfortunately, my sister couldn't make it), and in his quiet, thoughtful way, he had been carrying a secret heavier than my suitcase. That morning, strangely, I was ready long before he was (he usually takes 10 minutes to get ready). I couldn't understand why he was wasting so much time, pacing across the hotel room, looking for things he already had. He changed clothes several times, and at one point, he insisted I wear a swimsuit cover-up, which, in hindsight, was great advice. Then, as I was about to lose patience, he vanished into the bathroom. I rolled my eyes and even took his phone away so he wouldn't take too long in there, and then waited impatiently for him to come out. Poor man, cut off from the outside world, my family, no phone, alone, stalling in the bathroom, his secret plan to give my grandparents some time to get ready... hanging by a thread. When he finally emerged, we walked toward the hotel terrace. The mountain air was soft and warm, carrying the sound of distant music and laughter. Once we joined my family, they were smiling in that way people do when they know something you don’t, and I was still clueless. My aunt Kathy looked at me and said, “Come here, why don’t you sit next to Antonio?” We were talking and listening to live music on the Hotel terrace when, all of a sudden, I heard "Niña Bonita". The song that my father used to sing to me was being played by the hotel musician. I took it as a great coincidence, but at that moment, the air shifted. The musician stopped singing, and suddenly, Antonio was no longer sitting next to me. He was on one knee, tears in his eyes, words caught somewhere between the emotion... “I can’t talk,” he managed. He didn’t need to... I said yes. In that moment, under the soft hum of my father's song, my elderly grandparents and the eyes of almost everyone who mattered, time stood still, just long enough for my grandfather to be there beside me, as he had always wished, smiling the way one does when life comes full circle. And like the final scene of an old black-and-white film, everything was perfect in its imperfection. No manicure, hair messed up, all teared up, but full of love, holding on to a memory that I’ll treasure forever. I can’t believe I got my “movie moment.” It was the perfect day. Thank You, My Love. -Yesi.
