Marissa and John met at a friend's birthday celebration at Patsy's Irish Pub in Mission Viejo. John had seen a picture of Marissa several months before when their mutual friend had tried to set them up, but their schedules conflicted. When John saw Marissa and her brother, whom he had worked with at Blizzard Entertainment, he jumped at the opportunity to sit down and introduce himself. Marissa was even more beautiful in person and John was instantly smitten with her. They shared the night chatting without a moment of silence over beer and a couple rounds of karaoke. Marissa and John discovered that they shared similar tastes in music and talked about the same concerts that they had both attended previously. The thought that they may have crossed paths on many occasions, but were finally meeting- it was fate! As the night came to a close, John knew that there was something special between them and asked Marissa for her number. They spent the next week talking for hours on the phone and sending texts back and forth. John asked her to go on a date. He took her to Havana, a Cuban restaurant, and they got to know each other better over mojitos and empanadas. After dinner, they went to a jazz bar in downtown Fullerton where Marissa introduced John to his first Old Fashioned cocktail. John drove Marissa home, and they sat in his car and talked the night away. They shared their first kiss and John went home with a huge smile on his face. After a week of dating, John knew at that point she was the one. The only thing left for him to do was to ask her to be his Girlfriend. She said yes and the rest is history.
John and Marissa had been discussing marriage for quite some time. Marissa knew the proposal was coming, but John wanted to surprise her (which has never been an easy feat). John knew that if he planned a romantic getaway or outing that Marissa would see right through his plan. Seeing as they had met at a Karaoke Bar, John felt it was fitting to propose marriage at one. He planned a double date with Marissa's friend Lauren, and Lauren's husband, Colin. John practiced singing "I Only Have Eyes For You" by The Flamingos and coordinated with the Karaoke Jockey to play a customized video of the lyrics with pictures of him and Marissa. When John went up to sing, Marissa had no idea what was happening until he walked off the stage and got down on one knee. Although his singing was spotty due to being nervous, she said "Yes!".
