How we met

Truthfully, no one really knows

H: Fresh off the tennis court after a Jailbreak loss to the CT and signing up for my afternoon activity, I was trying to snag the shady spot for Deck Time before a meal. I had to shimmy my way past a group of Kohahna campers, who I always avoided, because I was focused on three main things at camp: the Flag Trip, store candy, and Taco Day. Anyway, Olivia was probably in the group of campers. But, I don’t recall. There isn’t a moment that I remember meeting her. But I do know that she was always there at camp, always at church in the offseason (after the first hymn), and was always a really good camp friend. She probably said that she had a crush on me since she was 12 or something, I'm not sure if I believe it. I’m just glad she has a crush on me now. It took me 15 years of going to camp with Olivia to realize her heart is bigger than the Big Tree, she is my best friend, and is way cooler than the shady spot on the deck. O: While Henry was searching for shade at lunch Deck Time, I was trying to come up with ways to have our conversations go beyond, "hi. what are your Morning Activities?" (tennis and border camp probably) and his question, "what's for lunch?" (tacos. and yes there is dessert) While the initial meet is fuzzy for us both, I do recall whispering to my cabin-mate Grace, at 13 years old that, "I have a crush on a boy from Leelanau" (Henry) and hoping that he'd hook my elbow during Elbow Tag. We spent summers together on Lake Michigan, at bonfires (you will never see a giddier group of teenage girls about to see their brother cabin on the beach post taps) as 1st year counselors on the 4th of July and as Head Counselors our last (for now) year of camp solidifying a friendship that I knew was going to continually unfold. What began as a camp crush that even my friends from home knew about where I admired and appreciated his humor, big heart, thoughtfulness and sense of integrity continued to evolve into an adoration and overwhelming sense of love for him.
