After coming back from a semester abroad in France, Sam was thinking about joining a group on campus to meet more people at ISU. She got an email about Phi Sigma Pi, a gender inclusive honors fraternity and decided to check it out. At one of the rush events, Sam & Kevin met and hit it off. The two got to know each other over rush week & eventually Kevin became her Big. Kevin & Sam texted and met up to study for the PSP initiation test, but soon they were talking about more than just the fraternity. They shared music & texted until late at night, spending more and more time together. A few weeks later, while Kevin was walking Sam home from a Halloween party, he finally got the courage to kiss her, and the rest is history.

After a very long 2020, Sam & Kevin decided to plan a weekend away to Door County, where Sam's family went on vacations nearly every summer of her childhood. She was very excited to share such a nostalgic place with Kevin & to visit again for the first time in nearly 10 years. While she had a sneaking suspicion that Kevin might use the vacation to his advantage, she had no idea how or when he might pop the question. On Friday they went parasailing and Sam thought maybe he would ask then, or perhaps during sunset dinner on Friday night. But Kevin had other plans. Saturday turned out to be a bit of a dreary day, but that didn't stop them from taking the ferry to Washington Island. There, they had a small lunch then visited the lavender fields & admired the beauty of the island despite the rainy weather. Then, they went to Schoolhouse beach, the rain let up to barely a drizzle. Walking hand in hand down the beach, Kevin finally stopped them and got down on one knee, Sam cried & said yes!
