The Shire retreat is surrounded by the Solana State Forest. This area has about 75 miles of wooded trails that wind over rolling hills and swampy sections. Slightly over half of the area within the forest is wetland. Timber harvesting, reforestation, and wildlife habitat improvement occur throughout this forest. There are no campgrounds within the forest, however dispersed camping is allowed provided state forest rules are followed. The White Pine forest road is the main connector between the trails located east and west of State Highway 65.
