How we met

High School Sweethearts

We first crossed paths at Holland Medical High School in Abilene, Texas, in December of 2022, during our senior year of high school. We shared the same class in Mrs. Davilla’s CCMA course, which had around 25 students. At first, we didn’t talk much, even though we became part of the same friend group. Heaven was the quiet, shy girl, always sitting in the corner, focused on her work and keeping to herself. Luke, on the other hand, was a natural chatterbox—always cracking jokes and making people laugh, no matter who he was with or what the situation was. At first, we did not get along in our friend group and were the ones typically bumping heads constantly, but I think it was known we both had a crush on each other. Then one day, without warning, Luke decided to move to the back of the room and sit next to her. Heaven didn’t understand why, and, if she’s honest, she’d admit she was a bit annoyed at first. She even told him several times to go back to his original seat, but he refused. I guess Luke would say Heaven played hard to get too much too often. A few weeks later, during a classroom break, Luke surprised her again by choosing to stay back from the group and help her grade some papers instead of hanging out with his usual friends. She allowed him to help, though we didn’t talk much. But even in that silence, she knew there was something more between them—though neither of us had said it out loud yet. When Christmas break came, we were apart for a couple of weeks. During that time, Luke reached out to Heaven on Snapchat, and we started texting more regularly. We were both too prideful to text first too often, but eventually, Luke made the first move and asked her out on a date. Heaven said yes. The night of our date, Luke picked her up at her house, and when he met her mom, he was polite and respectful—something she had never experienced before. We went to get dinner at Canes (Heaven’s favorite) and then we went to see an aerial combat movie, called Devotion. Heaven was nervous and anxious—it was their first time hanging out one-on-one without their friends. Luke, however, was hardly shy and initiated most of the talking. We quickly opened up with one another and clicked instantly, letting our personalities show. As time passed, we began meeting each other’s families and spending more and more time together. We quickly became inseparable. (literally inseparable, we did anything and everything together) At that point, we were still high schoolers, each navigating through our own emotional and mental challenges. Before we knew it, we were both headed off to college and luckily we were both committed to Texas Tech University. We quickly realized we were both moving to a new city, with new people, in a new atmosphere. We were both scared to create new lives than what our typical everyday high school routine was but we never feared because we knew that we had each other. We have gone through many bumps in the road, but each of those moments have helped us grow stronger as a couple. We’ve matured, learned, and deepened our love for each other through all circumstances, whether that's financial, emotional, or physical. We push each other to be better, to get out of our comfort zones, and we strive to be a Christ-like couple. When we first met, we were both on the wrong paths, surrounded by the wrong people. But together, we chose a different direction—one where Christ is at the center of our relationship. And every day, we thank God for bringing us together, uniting us as one, and showing us what true love is meant to look like.
