Heather's Perspective: It was my sophomore year of high school and Donald's junior year. My friends and I had just gotten our homecoming photos and were eagerly showing them to each other after school as Donald walked up to say hi to some of our mutual friends. He then very confidently walked over to me, introduced himself, and immediately took a look at my homecoming photo in which I was posed in the classic "hand on hip" position. He then told me, "Wow you look like Superwoman." We added each other on Myspace that night and the rest is history. I am so lucky to be able to spend the rest of my life with my Superman! Donald's Perspective: It is a universally accepted phenomenon that High School Juniors are infinitely cooler than their Sophomore counterparts. I recognized Heather as a friend of a friend and decided to talk to her because I was brimming with undeserved confidence from the previously mentioned phenomenon. We flirted intensely on MySpace and started dating a month later. The details are fuzzy because this was over 10 years ago!
Heather's Perspective: It was the night before Run to Feed the Hungry and Donald was set to run a 10k in the morning. When it came time to pick our dinner location, Donald very logically decided he wanted to load up on carbs and recommended Olive Garden (breadsticks anyone?!). I walked in about ten minutes before we were scheduled to meet, and Donald was sitting there looking as though he had been waiting a long time. Apparently he got there an hour early because he was so nervous! We talked non-stop for the entire dinner, got in the back seat of my mom's car as neither of us were old enough to drive, and went back to my house to watch Scarface (to this day I do not know why Donald picked that movie). He then met my dad - I will let Donald share that part of the story. At the end of the movie he asked if I would be his girlfriend. We kissed, my mom walked in right on cue and uncomfortably told a random story about squirrels, and Donald and I have been inseparable since. Donald's Perspective: At the time, Olive Garden was Sacramento's oldest, finest, and most well regarded Italian restaurant. It was not uncommon for people to line up down the street, even bringing lawn chairs and tents, for a chance to binge on unlimited breadsticks. With this fact in mind, I thoughtfully arrived at the restaurant well before our arranged meeting time- ready to battle the horde. None of what I just wrote is true. Heather unilaterally decided we would watch Scarface. Her dad threatened to mount my head on the wall next to his trophy bucks, and her mom brought us popcorn and said something about squirrels.
Heather's Perspective: We were at my parents' annual Christmas party with our immediate families, family friends, and some of our closest friends from high school. We were getting ready for our White Elephant when all of a sudden everyone started gathering around in a large semi-circle. I started to feel everyone's eyes on me and wondered to myself, "Is this the moment??!" Donald came out and announced that he had a video for everyone to watch. He then proceeded to play the most beautiful collection of some of our favorite (and embarrassing) memories from the past ten years. It also included special videos from our friends who were unable to make it that night to share how much our friendship means to them. Donald then got down on one knee and said, very quietly and shakily, "Will you marry me?" It was the sweetest and most thoughtful proposal from my best friend and I could not have been happier to say YES! Donald's Perspective: Sun Tzu wrote in the Art of War: "If you wait ten years to propose, you lose the element of surprise." With this ancient wisdom in mind, I liberated myself of the burden of planning an elaborate surprise and aimed to create something simple, meaningful, and absolutely fool proof with no moving pieces (Kurt). Having lulled myself into a false sense of accomplishment, I procrastinated on making the video until my very last week of Labor and Delivery. Thankfully, I was scheduled to work night shifts every day that week so I had plenty of time to work on the video (jokes). Thankfully, my friends supported my efforts by sending in video clips that perfectly met the specifications for duration and content in a timely fashion- dramatically reducing my stress (double jokes). Everything came together at the Christmas party, surrounded by many of our oldest friends and several people I had never met before as I had forgotten Heather's parents' friends were also invited.
