Heather and Chris met in the most 2020 way possible: on Hinge, mid-pandemic, when going on a date meant changing out of your daytime pajamas and hoping your Wi-Fi held up. Both proud University of Iowa grads (Go Hawks!), they bonded over their love of Iowa City despite somehow never running into each other during college. With nothing open and the world on pause, Chris pitched a creative first date: a virtual cocktail night. He sent Heather a shopping list for a Kentucky Mule and a Ring Central link (courtesy of his employer, Brooksource). They each set up in their parents’ homes, Heather in her mom’s kitchen, Chris in a very classic basement setup. The date had all the potential to be super awkward, but somehow, it wasn’t. They mixed drinks, laughed about college memories, compared pandemic coping strategies, and talked like old friends. From there, it evolved into more video calls, then real-life dates, living in Chicago, and eventually moving to different cities, building a life together, surrounded by many friends, filled with laughter, and marked by countless memories. Now, after several years and countless Kentucky Mules later, we’re getting married at Journeyman Distillery in New Buffalo, Michigan, a spot they kept coming back to on summer trips until it officially became one of their favorite places. It’s the perfect backdrop for what’s next: great drinks, great music, and a big celebration with all the people we love most.
