It was the first day of classes at UMass Amherst: Tuesday, September 4, 2008. Jack was a freshman. Heather transferred in as a sophomore. They were studying classics and starting their day with intensive ancient Greek. They couldn't have been more excited. Their friendship had a slow and bumpy start. Heather describes their relationship as: “I hated him.” But they were destined to remain colleagues. Jack went to Rome; Heather went to Pompeii. Jack was elected vice president of the classics club; Heather was elected president. They spent a lot more time together during their final year at UMass reading Greek and Latin, discussing their theses, and walking around campus. To their surprise, Jack and Heather didn’t have to say good-bye forever at graduation in May of 2012 because they grew up in neighboring (in fact, dueling) towns. They continued to read Greek together, but now Jack was going to Heather’s with pastries in hand. Soon they were hanging out without Homer and without pastries. On Sunday, December 9, 2012, they went to the Museum of Fine Arts together. Jack was sure it was a date. Heather wasn’t. Five years and 1 1/2 graduate degrees later, Jack was standing in the driveway of Heather’s Northampton, MA apartment with a ring in his pocket waiting for her to come home.
