It was 2006, David and Katie were both in Ms. Warrick’s Spanish class. He noticed her, from a distance. She was cute, sweet, and shy. She noticed him fooling around with his friends. He was funny, and so loud. If those things did not get her attention, his cane would. Yes, cane, he used it after he broke his ankle. Nowadays, David says they talked in the hallway a couple times, but unfortunately Katie does not recall those encounters. He even asked his friend about her once, he was so smitten, he wanted to get to know her better. During those two years together at San Juan high, nothing ever came between them. They were a very unlikely match, to say the least. But as their Spanish teacher, Ms. Warrick’s, famous words went: “No escapar”, and they did not. There was no escaping true love for Katie and David. They only took a detour, a fourteen-year long detour. Fast forwarding through that detour - amor verdadero brings them back together. In June 2020, Katie noticed David liking everything she posted on Facebook. After a few weeks of likes, she decided to check out his profile. To say she “liked” what she saw would be a gross understatement. So, on July 9th she “slid into his DM’s.” He wrote her back only minutes later, not wanting to miss this opportunity again. From that moment, their connection was instant, nothing forced, something neither of them have ever encountered before. The only thing that stood between them was 3000 miles. She flew out to see him in August, then again in September. Everything felt right, felt incredible. That is when they decided that Katie would move to the east coast to be with him. And in October, she did, taking a cross country journey with her dogs, plants, and hopes for the future all packed in her little red SUV. After settling in and feeling the love between them grow, it seemed there was only one step left to take. On November 14th, David asked Katie to marry him. Obviously, she said “yes!”
