I would say the first time I really spoke to Jake was at a sports award event. We were sitting outside the gym. I was waiting for my dad, he was the girls lacross coach so he had to attend, but I was bored sitting inside so I took a seat on the steps outside instead. All of a sudden a boy came out and sat on the steps with me. I recognized him from school but we had never talked before. I learned he was there to accept an award himself, but was also bored and was sitting out here to wait until he was called up. After that a funny thing happened, we kept talking, and talking. Before we knew it a couple hours had passed and people were filling out of the gym and my dad was calling for me. I looked at Jake and asked why he never went inside to get his award. He shrugged and said “they can send it in the mail. I was having more fun talking with you”
Although this wasn’t a true date, it felt like one. Jake and I had been messaging each other while he was working at The Courthouse. He had a bad day and was feeling down. His shift ended at midnight, so I left my house at 11:15pm and took the 45min drive out to Putnam at midnight to surprise him. He gave me some leftover fries and some ice cream while they finnished cleaning up. When he was done we went outside and just, walked around Putnam. We went up onto the stage in the park. Jake took his phone out and started playing grainy quiet music, and we danced. It was around 3am I started to loose feeling in my fingers. It was late October so it was very cold by that time, but even though I was shivering I didn’t want the night to end. We talked for hours walking around that town. Eventually the cold and the time forced us to say goodnight and go home. I didn't want to say goodbye, and I could tell he didn’t want to say goodbye either.
It was a beautiful day, and with no ability to go indoors at the height of COVID, we decided to spend the day at the beach. We basked in the sun and walked on the boardwalk, the weather couldn't have been more perfect. We had taken the motorcycle up, and as the day started coming to a close we got back onto it to head home. It the twilight hours, just as the sun was setting and the fireflies were coming out we stopped at this beautiful field with a lake in the middle. With the fireflies lighting up the field, the reflection in the lake looked like the night sky, and the sky itself was washed in the pinks and oranges of sunset. It was there he asked me if I wanted to be with him forever, and I said Yes.
