How It Started

Don't take candy from strangers...

One day in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Hayley stopped at a corner shop to get some Haribo Tangfastics. She really only wanted the sour cherries, so she took the rest of the bag to her rock-climbing club meeting. She walked around the gym offering the spare candy to her club mates. Then she noticed a stranger staring at her. He kept coming closer and then walking away. Eventually, he approached and asked in his heavenly Irish accent, “Are you American?” A conversation ensued. Hayley and this stranger talked about everything and nothing until, suddenly, they noticed everyone else was leaving for the evening. Luckily, club members normally continued on to a local bar. It was then that Hayley realized this stranger was nameless to her. “What's your name?" she asked. The stranger replied "Glenn, with two n's." The two went to the bar with others and continued their conversation. Glenn noticed Hayley didn't have a drink. Being a gentleman, he offered to buy her one, at which point Glenn found out Hayley didn't drink. He thought this was perplexing and asked, “What do you do for fun then?" Hayley replied that she enjoyed going to St. George's Market to buy groceries and take in the live music on Saturdays. "Oh wow, I haven't been there in forever," replied Glenn. "Well, you should come sometime,” Hayley said. Now, Hayley was doing a very American thing. She was offering an empty invitation. You know, the sort of thing you say to be nice, knowing all the while nothing will come of it. Glenn, being Irish, replied, “OK, sounds good. What time would you like to go on Saturday?" Hayley paused to assess her miscalculation. Here she was a graduate student temporarily living in Belfast, not seeking any kind of commitments. But she was stuck, now committed to a morning of grocery shopping with this Glenn. Well, Saturday morning came, and the two set out for the market. The day flew by and they fell madly in love with donuts and, not yet known to them at the time, each other.

The Proposal(s)

Don't get in the way of Hayley and Disney

On a vacation to Disney World in Florida, Hayley noticed that Glenn was dawdling. It was early in the morning, and they were supposed to be headed to Hayley’s favorite Disney World park, Hollywood Studios. She wanted to be first into the park to make sure they would get in line for the new Rise of The Resistance Star Wars attraction, the opening of which Hayley had been awaiting with great anticipation. Hayley stood by the door in quiet angst, hoping Glenn would soon follow. They were staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, where Glenn enjoyed watching the animals walk around in the mornings. “Hayley, come look at these cattle,” he said. "They are being weird!" Hayley, hoping to shift Glenn into gear, ran to the balcony to see the Ankole cattle that had attracted Glenn’s attention. The cattle were doing exactly what they always do, walking and grazing. Hayley’s impatience boiled over. She turned and shouted, “They are just being cattle, you idiot!” At that moment, she noticed Glenn on one knee, holding a gorgeous ring. "Hayley, will you be my wife?" Glenn asked. "Yeah, sure, of course,” Hayley blurted out. “But we're late. Can we do this later?" In hindsight, Hayley realized that was probably not the answer of Glenn’s fondest desire. It was a beautiful moment ruined. Not to worry. Glenn is an engineer by training. He formulated Plan B. A few weeks later, while in Seattle to visit Hayley’s brother, Hank, and his fiancé, Emily, Glenn and Hayley visited a beautiful lighthouse with special meaning to Glenn. Near the lighthouse, he asked, "Is this a better time?" Hayley instantly knew and shouted, “YES!" before Glenn could even get on one knee. It had been a double “yes” — yes, it was a better time and, yes, I will be your wife. So, according to Hayley, if you add Glenn’s Plan A to Plan B and divide by two, you get a fairly traditional and romantic proposal. But, Hayley was never very good at math.
