Our Story

A Chance Meeting on the Mountain

Sewanee is an interesting place to go to college. A small, remote liberal arts school in Middle Tennessee, it's noted mainly for its gothic architecture, picturesque mountain views, and infamous party weekends. It's also home to the Sewanee Review, "America’s oldest continuously published literary quarterly." A year and change after her graduation, Hayden was still living in Sewanee working at the Review when Walt came up for his five-year college reunion in November 2022. She and a friend decided to go to the Friday night kickoff party for some free beer, which is where they recognized Walt from some old Sewanee Review staff pictures. When we got to talking, we realized we had a lot in common beyond our time in Sewanee—we were both from Birmingham, we had lots of mutual friends, and we both had good taste in books and beer. So, we traded numbers and spent much of the weekend together. It's a cliche, but people sometimes ask us if it's true that "when you know, you know." On that chilly Friday night in Sewanee, we both knew. Walt lived 150 miles away in Knoxville, so the next weekend we met up in Chattanooga for our first real date. The spark was still there as we wandered the halls of the Tennessee Aquarium, and for the next several months we spent a lot of time on I-24, visiting each other every other weekend. In May 2023, Hayden and her roommate Briana decided it was time to move off the mountain, and took a leap of faith by renting a house in North Knoxville, right around the corner from Walt. Soon, they both had new jobs and new friends as they made "The Scruffy City" their home. A couple years on, North Knoxville is still our home. We live (with our beloved cat, Zoe) close to several of our best friends, and we both have jobs we love—Hayden as a reporter for the Knoxville News Sentinel, and Walt as marketing manager for the University of Tennessee Press. It also helps that we're within walking distance of a record store, several craft breweries, and the best karaoke bar in the city. We couldn't be more excited to come back to our hometown of Birmingham to celebrate our wedding with you, our friends and family. We hope this site answers any questions you might have about the big day, and we look forward to seeing you all soon!
