It all started back in first grade, when Kate had just moved from Nebraska to Arkansas and began school at Bellview Elementary. Though Kate and Hayden were in the same school, they were just two kids passing in the halls. A few years later, they finally shared classes in fourth and fifth grade. Kate’s clearest memory of Hayden from that time was him enthusiastically singing the “Friday Song” every single week in fifth grade, something that still makes her smile to this day. From there, life carried them through middle school and high school, always crossing paths but never quite noticing the bigger story that was being written. It wasn’t until the very last semester of senior year that God decided to give them a little nudge. They landed in the same science class: Kate with her jelly beans to share, and Hayden, who, true to form, was almost always late to class. Those small moments became the beginning of something neither of them could have predicted. As senior year wrapped up, Kate made the decision to attend Ouachita Baptist University, while Hayden planned to go to the University of Arkansas. At the time, it seemed like their story would remain just a sweet memory of childhood and high school days. But then, in one of life’s unexpected twists, Hayden decided to attend OBU as well, a blessing that neither of them could have written better themselves. It was at OBU that Kate and Hayden finally began to see each other with new eyes. After more than a decade of being in school together, they started dating as they stepped into college life. That first summer was filled with adventures, laughter, and the joy of realizing that sometimes the best things are worth the wait. Through college, they grew side by side, not just as individuals but together as a couple, learning, supporting, and becoming the people they are today. Then, in the summer, they celebrated three years together; Hayden planned a surprise trip to Nashville. On August 8th, at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, surrounded by flowers, sunshine, and the beauty of the moment, Hayden got down on one knee and asked Kate to marry him. It was the perfect continuation of a love story that had been quietly weaving itself since first grade. From childhood classmates to college sweethearts and now soon-to-be husband and wife, this is only the beginning of the rest of their story.
