How We Met

6.28.18

We met at a Backwards K Jax softball camp at Victoria Park in Jacksonville, FL. Heather was coaching at Mercer University and Amanda was coaching at Florida Tech. Ali had us paired up on a field to coach a team. In true Backwards K fashion, it rained, and while Ali went into crisis prevention, the coaches went to a brewery. A wonderful friendship was born... Fast forward to May 2019. Heather has a career change and needs a vacation. She wants to come to the beach on her way to visit her grandma. This trip, something is a little different. Heather leaves to visit her grandma, with a promise to return in a few days. She headed back to Melbourne Beach, and we had our first date. Amanda asked Heather to be her girlfriend a couple weeks later on May 28, 2019 during a trip to Key West. We have been on the greatest adventure ever since.

The Proposal

5.27.23

Heather proposed first! A little bit about Amanda and myself...we tend to go on spontaneous trips and plan with minimal time, prime example: Our Wedding. On a Sunday in late May 2023, we decided that next weekend we needed to take a road trip to go watch one of Amanda's former players coach in the Women's College Softball Super Regionals in Norman, Oklahoma. We drove 17 straight hours on Friday after I got out of school, arriving just after 3am. Saturday was an absolutely beautiful day in Oklahoma. The sun was shining, it was a warm 95 and we witnessed one of the best softball games either of us had ever seen. Following the game we planned to go to the home of the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City because Heather had never seen the field. Heather had gotten ready, had the ring in her backpack and put it in the car before Amanda had gotten out of the shower. Everything seemed to be in place, EXCEPT, Amanda got out of the shower and didn't want to go to the Stadium anymore...so Heather had to do her best pouting and whining until she got her way (side note...this doesn't happen often so it was a HUGE win in her book). We finally got in the car and drove to the stadium. They were staging it for the Women's College World Series, which would take place the week after we had gotten there. We got out of the car, Heather popped the trunk, Amanda looked at her weird and asked what she was doing, "Grabbing a jacket". Weird. We walk around for a while, trying to find a way into the venue. No luck. Amanda is hungry. Time is slipping away quickly...so Heather asks "Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play here?" Amanda answers. We walk some more towards the front and the car (she keeps walking towards the car). "Have you ever wanted to hit a home run here?" Amanda‘s answer: "No I'd rather strike someone out…I know I can't hit a home run anymore but I think I could still strike someone out." This answer now has Heather worried...she’s trying to hit a home run here and Amanda is now focused on striking someone out...GREAT! So Heather pauses for a second as Amanda keeps on slowly walking away, Heather grabs her hand and says "Please stop trying to walk away." She says "I'm hungry.” Heather grabs her hand again and turns her around getting on one knee and says, “Can I hit a home run here?" Amanda starts crying, Heather starts crying and says "Amanda will you marry me?" She says "YES"! We finally find a guy to open the gate so we can take some pictures down next to the field. It was the best night of our lives so far and we can't wait to spend the rest of our lives going on adventures together!
