How We Met

RIP Rude Rudy's

On Saturday, November 9, 2013, I went to the Sigma Chi house at Georgia Southern University to tailgate for the Western Carolina homecoming game. I showed up to the house with one of my littles, Carley Ray. I knew about one of Carley's friends Mason because she would always call him to hangout with us but he would always bail, so this was going to be my first time meeting one of her friends. The homecoming tailgate included both past and present fraternity members ranging from early 20s to late 50s so at the beginning of the tailgate nothing was really happening. We got bored and decided they wanted to start a game of flip cup and Mason was the first guy to quickly agree and help with set up! Other people joined in and the tailgate started to take off after that. The rest of the tailgate was spent chatting, dancing and hanging out. Mason ended up going to the homecoming game, but we decided to grab something to eat instead and another fraternity member, Nick, decided he wanted to join. While at El Sombreo, I asked Carley and Nick about this Mason guy and got some generic answers in response. On the way to drop Nick off at the fraternity house on the way back, Mason came out to the car to say hey. I asked him what he was doing after the game and he put his hand on the roof of the car, leaned into the window and said, "I'm doing whatever you are doing!" We ended up going out that night to Rude Rudy's (RIP) and started to hangout and accompany each other to sorority and fraternity parties after that. -Kaylee

How He Proposed

03/29/2019

Mason's 25th birthday was on March 30, 2019. On March 1st, I started planning his birthday celebration. His mother called me on the same day asking if she could throw Mason a surprise birthday dinner on the 29th (our anniversary). Little did I know, this surprise dinner was actually a surprise engagement party. Well I spent basically the entire month being sassy and frustrated about the dinner, but I went along with it. Fast forward to the afternoon of March 29th. Mason was working from the apartment. He was being so sweet and saying how excited he was to be celebrating our five years together, and I was so stressed. We get in the Uber and head to Park Tavern, and I get a text from his mother saying that we need to stall. She suggests we take a picture in the park while the sun was going down. While we walk to the park just outside of the restaurant, Mason keeps trying to look into the restaurant and I keep telling him to stop because I didn't want him to see his family. We get to a great spot, and I take a picture of the sunset over Piedmont Park. Mason suggests that we take a selfie and that is when I see Hannah Cohen, a photographer friend of my sister's, taking senior photographs for another girl. I go to hug her and return to Mason for the selfie. While I am checking out the selfie, he starts talking and I hear, "You should put your phone away." I look up and he throws his jacket down on the ground and has a ring box in his hand. I don't remember anything he said. I do remember him getting on one knee. I remember seeing the ring. Crying. Saying YES! Shaking. Crying more and then seeing my mom, sister, best friends, and future family-in-law rush out of the restaurant to congratulate us. Finally I realize that this surprise birthday dinner was a surprise engagement party! Mason couldn't have planned a more special moment and I am so blessed for everyone that was involved! -Kaylee
