It all started at a college house party during our junior year. Amanda was hanging out on her own, and Harry, ever the social butterfly, decided to introduce himself. He asked if they’d met before—specifically at a weekend house-boat party in Lake Shasta, CA. Although we did not in fact meet that weekend in Shasta, that didn’t stop the conversation from flowing. We talked the entire night and into the early morning hours. From that moment on, we were inseparable, spending almost every weekend together. After six months of convincing, Amanda finally agreed to make it official and became Harry’s girlfriend. In 2019, Amanda graduated and moved back to California to pursue her dream of becoming an occupational therapist. Harry stayed at OSU for another year (as mechanical engineering degrees tend to go), marking the start of our long-distance journey. After graduating in 2020, Harry aimed to find a job in Los Angeles to be closer to Amanda, but the chaos of COVID made opportunities scarce—except for one. The Navy was hiring, and three months later, Harry signed a contract to be a Nuclear Propulsion Officer for Submarines. While Harry began his military training in Newport, Rhode Island, Amanda worked at a hospital in Glendale, CA, and applied to grad school. Over the next three years, Harry moved between Charleston, SC; Groton, CT; and Bremerton, WA, while Amanda earned her Master’s in Occupational Therapy at West Coast University. We made it a priority to see each other whenever possible, though there were stretches where months would pass without being together. It wasn’t always easy, but the distance only deepened our commitment and strengthened our bond. Through it all, we knew we were growing closer and more ready to take the next step in our lives. Now, as we prepare to say “I do,” we’re thrilled to start this new chapter together. Harry will soon transition out of the military, and we’ll embark on a fresh adventure in a new place. For now, we’re savoring every moment together, exploring the beauty of Washington State, and celebrating the love that’s carried us through it all.
