Maiyan Ceremony

11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Merced, CA

Please wear yellow to this event. This is an optional event and typically open to family and close friends.

There will be the Maiyan ceremony in Harpinder's parents' backyard in Merced, where our family and friends will rub turmeric (haldi) paste on Harpinder and Ali; the traditional meaning of Maiyan is to cleanse the skin and create a glow! Traditionally, this ceremony involves "cleaning" the bride and groom in preparation for their wedding day.

Mendhi Ceremony

3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

This event is only open to women and non-binary identifying folks.

Then, there will be a Mehndi (henna) ceremony later on in the evening, where an artist will put henna on Harpinder (both hands and feet) and on anyone who wants it as well (on one or both hands). For these events, it is recommended/highly suggested to wear Indian clothing for women. Since these events will be at Harpinder’s parents' home, you do not need to dress too fancy, and modesty is encouraged. It is a more casual gathering, and Indian food will be provided.

Jaggo (Punjabi Party)

6:00 pm - 11:00 pm

A.P.C. Portuguese Hall of Atwater
1420 Third Street, Atwater, CA 95301

Wear colorful festive Indian clothing! Open to all guests.

Join us for a traditional Punjabi wedding celebration. What to expect: Jaggo literally means “wake up”. Centuries ago, invitations were not sent to invite people to weddings. Relatives of the bride or groom would go around the village on the night before the wedding day with pots on their heads that were decorated with oil candles, singing, and dancing as an open invitation to attend the wedding. The candles were used for light as this was before electricity. The traditional folk song is “jaggo”, so they would encourage people to wake up and join in the festivities. Expect dancing! Indian snacks and food will be plentiful - dinner is provided. Encouraged to wear colorful clothing & dress to impress! For women or non-binary: Lehenga, sari, Salwar kameez/Punjabi suit, an Anarkali dress, or palazzo/sharara. For men or non-binary: Semi-formal (strikes a balance between formal and casual wear. It involves wearing a suit, dress shirt, tie-optional, and dress shoes) or kurta pajama.
